coming out?!
May. 26th, 2005 12:05 amJust a quick one:
What's the best way of telling someone that your gay in Russian? I've been wondering this for a while... I'd like to avoid all words with negative connotations (naturally) but because I'm not a native speaker, I don't know which words to avoid!
Any help would be appreciated.

Date: 2005-05-25 11:51 pm (UTC)I think you might say something like "женщины меня не интересуют". This is reasonably double-sided and still perfectly understood in the proper sense.

Date: 2005-05-26 01:54 am (UTC)What would be the difference between женщины меня не интересуют and я не интересуюсь женщинами? Like, is there a slight shade of meaning or what?

Date: 2005-05-26 02:52 am (UTC)я не интересуюсь женщинами just doesn't give this "special" meaning. Like if your'e not sexually active at all ;)
женщины меня не интересуют, especially with a small meaningful pause after "меня", will most probably be understood just the way you mean it 8)

Date: 2005-05-25 11:58 pm (UTC)I think the official way to say that is "я гомосексуалИст" (I'm homosexual).
There was a slang word "голубой" (literally "blue"), but I'm not sure is it positive or not.
Most likely, in gay community they just say "я гЕй".
Word "gay" was adopted in Russian slang some time ago, less than 15 years, as a more positive way to say "гомосексуалИст".
If nobody will give you THE right answer, I will ask in

Date: 2005-05-27 12:41 am (UTC)Also as the Russian rendering as "Gomosexualist" it's sort of funny for me all around!
It does sound slightly religious...could turn it into a bad chat up line, which religion do you follow?
British humour, oh dear...

Date: 2005-05-26 02:00 am (UTC)Was your question out of curiosity? Cuz if you're going to come out to a Russian (if you think he's gay as well), then I dunno, touching would be a good way to coming out! Ha, how naughty.

I know that in some states oral sex is formally illegal. Doesn't mean a thing, though =)

Date: 2005-05-26 05:20 am (UTC)No it does not. Haha!
I'm pretty sure sodomy is illegal in most states. And I remember hearing a silly law about only the missionary position being the legal one. But pfft. California must not have it, at least not San Fran, for they still have bathhouses.
They wouldn't put gays in prison, but they'd be inclined to it. Same thing in courtrooms. A lot of discrimination.
