Well, to say the truth I was shocked when today checked my mailbox and found 58 comment notifications. I didn't expect such feedback. Thanks.

Now about the meaning of word MAT itself. Note the following expressions:

verbs:

материть(ся) — to just talk or insult using MAT;
матюгать(ся), матюкать(ся) — the same as above;
ругать(ся) матом — the same as above;
крыть матом — the same as above;
посылать матом — to send the listener far away using MAT.

nouns:

маты, матюги, матюки — MAT words;
матерщина — insultive speaking;
матерщинник — active user of MAT;

adjectives:

матерный — that contains маты (матерная речь, матерные слова)

Their radicals supposedly origin from word мать — mother. In the ancient times the main meaning of MAT was insulting the listener's mother. Some phrases that express this idea are still present in Russian but are much obsolete and rarely used:

«Ёб твою мать!», for example. The insulting of the listener's mother has almost lost its sense in nowadays Russia. But its STRONGLY RECOMMENDED not to do so towards Caucasian and Middle-Asian people who understand this literally, otherwise you might get serious injury. The other expressions are: едрить твою мать, едрить тебя кочергой, едрить тебя налево, едрить тебя через колено etc. Not the verb едрить — an obsolete form of ебать.

Many expressions have been replaced with words that sound similar with MAT but are not actually MAT. But anyway they are quite informal so you should avoid using them:

  • expressions based on хуй: хрен, хреновый, херня etc. Хрен means horse-radish (vegetable) and just sounds and looks like хуй.
  • expressions based on ебать: ёшкин кот, ёкарный бабай, едрёна кочерыжка, ёлки-палки etc. These words mean exclamation (surprise, shock etc. depending on the situation) but their usage is strictly bond with these or similar expressions.
  • expressions based on блядь: блин, бляха-муха etc. These words also mean exclamation but their original lexical meaning has nothing to do with informal speaking: блин means pancake and бляха means name-plate, number plate, badge and other similar items made of shiny metal. They just sound like блядь.

I liked very much the translation into English of the word 'невъебенный' as 'unfuckable'.
And 'ебать мой лысый череп' from an anecdote as 'fuck my skin head'.

I don't think that "unfuckable" is an adequate translation for невъебенный. I would say "un-fucking-believable" or something to this extent.

By the way, you've missed:
поблядушки (noun, women, plural) - a party with бляди.
проблядь - noun, suplative degree of блядь

That was just a remark. Nothing personal.

The stress in the word про́блядь is on the first syllable.

блин means pancake and бляха means name-plate

So it's basically like saying "Oh fudge" instead of "Oh f**k"?

Correct.

or "crud" instead of "crap". What amuses me is when these substitutes become 'as bad as the real words' in the eyes of some -- I've heard people told off for saying “screwed up”, when “screw” is really just a substitute for fuck ...

Date: 2005-05-18 09:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] schwarzer-tod.livejournal.com
Well, "screw" is like a milder way of saying it, not really a euphemism. Crap:Shit::Screw:Fuck. It's not a word kids can say. Around puberty you start being able to say words like "screwed", "pissed", and maybe "shit".

What I mean is, "f**ked" and "screwed" are both euphemisms for penetration, but "screwed" is not euphemic for "f**ked".

The term is 'euphemism'. :)
