Hello,

I came across a literal translations of Russian into English which are quiet funny:
first, the english God in Rus. means Year, whilst thw word for God in rus. is Bog which stands for, well, WC in UK Engl.

futhermore, the literal translation of 'lady bird' and 'armpit' into rus. is Holy Cow and Under The Mouse respectively.......just thought I'd share this with you if you alrady didn't know......

Best,
A

naturally...

That's "under the mouse" for those who don't know that it is originally "under the muscle".

The year I was in first-year russian was the year that Ross Perot was running for president.
Which meant that my entire class would burst into giggles every time someone said "here is the pen" in Russian. ;)

But перо is a quill, not a pen.

There is an entire dictionary of words like that somewhere on the Web - it is called "рунглийский словарь", as far as I can recall.
This reminds me of the times when imported cigarettes first appeared in Russian market (late 1980s; before that, the smokers could only buy Soviet-made tobacco.) One of the first tobacco brands to appear here was MORE. Of course the majority of smokers who were not aware that in English you wrote Manchester and spelled Liverpool, were spelling MORE as "море" - which was The Sea in Russian and sounded like quite a good name for a tobacco brand.

About God. the word "God" in Russian (the way it is pronounced in Am.E.) means reptile, skunk and vermin.
