I just graduated with my BA in Russian language, and am in the process of the Fulbright Process and need a way to keep up my language skills so that I don't hit Moscow "cold" as it were. You all seem like a fabulous group and I look forward to learning Russian with you. :)

And why not to permit using Russian in this community? It's good for practice (see for example the previous message). Usually such forums are bilingual.

Если я правильно тебя понял, говорят "I am cold with smth", если чувствуют себя неуверенно с этим smth? Или "I hit cold with smth"?
Могу исправить пару твоих ошибочек в русском, если хочешь.

I spent lots of time with Adrienne and Justin. I also talked to Heather, Ryan (is that his name, really tall, 23 yrs, looks totally southern-midwestern?), and other people who's names I can't recall.
I saw photos of Russian plays that were put on. Justin was the bear in one of them.

Date: 2004-03-05 07:27 am (UTC)My perspective. . .these problems aren't just at Nevsky, but are part and parcel of the Russian system as a whole. But the challenge lies in how you deal with them. We're pretty spoiled being Americans and living with a system that runs pretty seamlessly comparatively. I love Adrianne to pieces (one of my dearest and longest friends), but just sitting in a coffee shop all day and complaining isn't exactly high on the productive side either. Why sit around and complain when St. Petersburg is full of amazing historical, artistic and cultural experiences? The Hermitage is free for students, for heaven's sake!
So it goes both ways, and like much of life, is about how one rises to the challenge. And in many ways that group didn't do much rising. Not to say it isn't hard (I was in the second group to go, when the program was still being tested), but that's not an excuse in and of itself for failure.
Sorry about that little rant. *blush* I was one of the student advisors for students studying at Nevsky and was in on much of the damage control caused by the immaturity of some of our students studying that semester. I really hope that you didn't come away with a horrible impression of OU or of OU students. Most of us are substantially more studious and level headed than what that bunch seems to have displayed. And I hope that you had an overall good experience in St. Petersburg. Did you enjoy your time there at all?

Do not forget that the majority of those people here who study Russian (i.e. are no native speakers, like you or like me,) are in a very early stage of study. The puropse of this community, as far as I understand it, is to help those who learn Russian, and not to overwhelm them with the fact how difficult this language can really be :))
There is plenty of other places (even here in LJ) where one can communicate in Russian, anyway. Here, we just help the beginners with this "великий, могучий, правдивый и свободный русский язык" (c) Ivan Turgenev 8--))))
