I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some Russian bands/singers... My personal theory is that listening to people singing in Russian will help me with my pronounciation. :) So could anyone name some bands/singers that sing in Russian and that I might like [and I could get on Ebay :)]? I like mostly pop/rock music. My favourites of the moment are the Rasmus, HIM, Evanescence, Ani Difranco, Liz Phair, Paula Cole, and poppy stuff like Shakira and Savage Garden. And Tatu. :)
Anyway, so does anyone know any Russian bands/singers that are similar?

I don't know about Ebay, but there is a Russian site offering legal downloads of MP3 music, and they have all the major Russian artists. The site is at http://club.mp3search.ru, they accept PayPal and credit cards, and the prices start from $20 for 20 gigabytes of music to download.

If you like Shakira, you might like Ночные Снайперы, more of a rock band, but with a similar manner of singing. Beware that the lyrics of many modern Russian bands don't make a lot of logical sense, rather like the lyrics of, say, R.E.M.

I would also recommend Иван Купала, a Deep Forest -like band sampling authentic Russian folk music (which is a far cry from the hackneyed Katyusha and Kalinka).

Hm...

Despite my time here I haven't found much that's terribly good.

For rock kind of stuff, you could try:

B2 (sort of rock) I quite like the lead singer's voice. Not quite in the same league as a band like HIM, but probably one of the vague equivalents.

Splean (more pop-rock) Quite popular, their lyrics can be amusing.

Zemfira (female soft rock) One of the few artists known to perform abroad (at an extortionate rate to Russian ex-pats - 25ukPounds for a ticket when she played in London!), she has her moments, but not a personal favourite. If I'm going to listen to female rock stuff, I prefer Chicherena

I second the motion on Nochni Sniperi, they're quite good.

Have you ever seen the film "Brat-2"? It's got a half-decent soundtrack of rock type things, if you can get the soundtrack you might enjoy that.

For really cheesy pop, you can't get any worse than:

Glukoza
Viagra and
Hi-fi

No problem! If you have difficulties, I can always get some from the cd market here (100 rubles or a bit more each, that's about $3/4us and post them to you (god knows how long it would take though). For even less I could copy my own if you want to be really miserly!

mmm, that's a potentally sweet deal *lol*

someone had me burn them a lot of russian techno pop, and the best thing i pulled out of that was Gosti iz Budeshchego (sp?), which the lyrics do make a modicum of sense, and the beat is (for the most part) quite swanky.

Unfortunately not...

No...I don't have paypal, but checking your profile you're in the Netherlands...hm

I think I can trust some Euros (or even better, glorious British pounds: damn isn't it so stupid not having the Euro?!?!) being stuffed into an envelope to reach my address in the UK and then I can get my mother to throw it into my account. Once she tells me it's arrived I'll rip the music and send it off to you :)

It's not ideal I know but if you can think of a better way I'm open to ideas :)

Costs:
A decent cd-r will cost about 20/40 rubles, so let's make that an average 30 (just over 1 us Dollar) plus postage (another or 20 per disk I guess) and you're looking at about 1/1.5e per cd. Make it 2e to ensure all costs are covered and I get a bit of change for chocolate?

Bargin eh?

Now lets see...these are the cds I have:

B2 - two albums, although "Miaow kiss me" (rubbish title) is the better one. I suspect a new album is on it's way soon. In fact looking at their site it allegedly is, but I haven't seen it!
Splean - their two most recent albums, I prefer the slightly older one myself.
Brat 2 soundtrack
Glukoza - current album, bought it last week...ooooh it's bad!

Other stuff:

Leningrad - sometimes obscene Russian SKA stuff. Silly.
Pilot - a sort of semi-alternative soft rock band who I forgot to mention before
Tatu - the Russian version of their album (all songs in Russian)

No Zemfira, Chicherina or Nochni Snaiperi but I might be able to borrow some off other teachers.

I can buy others at the market if you really want them and post those on - about 4us/3e each they'll be.

Check out these sites if you want a little more info:

Have fun :)
