I recently read that a mere 1.5% of people studying a foreign language in the United States are studying Russian!

On that note, I have gotten my friend interested in learning Russian now and possibly going to Russia. She bought a Russian CD and book, and she studies every night. She is still trying to master the alphabet, but she is so excited to be able to read and learn Russian words. It seems to have opened up a whole new world to her, and I am excited to see yet another person interested in this magnificent language!

funny though, how people seem to flock to learn it once others they know have, though. my french teacher was studying russian while i was in her class, so follow suite after the fact, and i completely dig the language! (need to study more, going rusty on myself!)

and i found out last week that one of my friends from a different school thought that it was cool that i had learned russian, and is now studying it in college, and he loves it as well :D

Yeah I'm actually quite frustrated with my old high school because there were budget cuts these past few years and the first two things to go are the Russian and German programs. They're sort of phasing them out which is better that just halting the program, but people had sentimental attatchement to the program and the teahcer that set it up essentially just retired a few years ago and she was brough out of retirement to teach when her replacement left. She was quite sad that they were throwing everything she worked so hard for down the tubes.

Yeah, it is interesting how that happens. My husband started learning Russian about 4 years ago (when we were just dating), and about 2 years later I became interested in it. Now, because of me, my friend is interested in Russian. Hopefully there will be others we know who will at least be interested in learning some Russian and also learning about Russian history and culture.

That is so frustrating. When I was in high school, we weren't even offered Russian-only Spanish, French, and German. I took 3 years of French, but if only I had taken 3 years of Russian. It is a shame your old H.S. is getting rid of the program. We need MORE language programs (that start even earlier), not less!

Yeah, I tried to make blini from a recipe one of my Russian friends gave me there when I got back and it just wasn't the same!
