now that i want to ask, i can't think of the correct word for this type of expression. :-S

in english, there's "yay" and "hoorah", in japanese, there's "banzai"; in english you say "ow", in french you say "ai"...

what are the russian equivalents?

many thanks!

Here are some...

Can't be bothered to change to cyrillic, but here are some things I've heard/picked up:

oora (like "hurrah" just without the h)
blin! (lit. pancake - used instead of saying a much worse word. Pretty much a universal exclamation)
oi (kind of like "uh-oh" or "oh!")

I can provide a few more such slangy things on request: I teach Russian kids/teens, it the only useful thing I get out of them :) eg. kryta (lit. "steep" or somehow related to that word) is "cool".

Russian hoorah/banzai is УРА! (а is stressed).
Ow/ai is "ай" (sudden pain) and "ой" (unexpected event,) and if you want to sound really childish (or, to be exact, boyish,) say "уйя!" (я is stressed) - that's the real kid talk :)

"Ура!" for "hoorah" (the same word, practically).

"Ой", "ох", "ай", "оу" for "ow".
