i'm trying really hard to learn russian, but it's proving to be quite a challenge. :) anyway, i have a question, how do you type in cyrillic in livejournal? i see you all doing it, but i can't figure out how to do it myself!

You have to install the Russian input method on your computer. If you use Windows, go to Control Panel/Regional Options and add Russian under Languages. The system may ask you for the installation CD.

Hi,
you have to add Russian language in system settings. The letters have their own order on the keyboard. F.e. Russian "A" is on the button with standard "F", and so on. You can use special stickers for keyboard, or simply write the letters on the buttons by pen.

You can also buy a keyboard that has both characters printed on it. Logitech make one, for example.

No-No-No
If you have Win98 you should go to Control Panel/Keyboard, then - to Languages, then - Add Language, than - choose the Russian one :)
Sorry, I have the Russian version of Win98 so maybe the English names of items are different... but anyway - you should find the picture of keyboard in your Control Panel :)

Windows 98 could be funky. Russian is easier to turn on in Windows 2000/XP. Meanwhile, you can use the converter:
http://www.mashke.org/Conv/

Convert from "translit" (like this - "Ya govoryu po-russki") into KOI-8.

wow, I'd love one of those - maybe for when I've learnt more Russian though.

instructions are here, and they worked for me.
You can either buy stickers, a russian keyboard, or write in the characters yourself. It's not hard, and you can switch from english to russian in the same message. хорошо? :c)
