It's that time of the year, my classes are starting again, and I need suggestions for what to read in my Russian class. I'm looking for suggestions for short stories. Last semester, I read Checkov's "Пари" and "Тоска", so something along those lines in length/challenge would be nice.

random pick:
"Желтый свет" (Yellow Light), by Konstantin Paustovsky
http://kosmos-in.narod.ru/paystovskii.html

I don't know if you'll like it though, there's a lot of description and almost zero action, but it's beautifully written, with rich imagery and no cliches.

Did you read Михаил Булгаков "Мастер и Маргарита"? :)

Try Зощенко — a bit of pure russian satire in little stories.

don't you think it will be a little hard to read, with all those colloquialisms?

I don`t think Зощенко is a good idea. His language is very specific - it is a joke itself. Зощенко is a very good reading for very good russian-speakers. :)
My advise is Иван Бунин - he is one of the best masters of style.

I think Bulgakov or Zoschenko will be really hard to read. The best thing I can figure out is Chekhov's short stories (рассказы).

I second the recommendation of Бунин -- try Мой Первый Гус, though all are short and marvelous. There's also the classics -- Гогол 's Нос is witty and not too difficult to read.

Classical literature is good but try some authors like Strugackie (http://lib.ru/STRUGACKIE/).

For example Путь на Амальтею (http://lib.ru/STRUGACKIE/amalxteq.txt). Here (http://lib.ru/STRUGACKIE/engl_amal.txt) is english variant.

I recommend you Gogol (Гоголь)
"Shinel" (Шинель) and "Nose" (Нос)
Its rather easy to read, also funny and interesting.
