Sometimes while working on homework, I'll come across a Russian nickname that I'm unfamiliar with. It would be nice to be able to look up the name so I don't get my papers back with smiley faces and notes that Стёша would probably object to being called a girl. The problem is that the lists I've found online so far are pretty limited.

Are there any more comprehensive lists online? Russian pages are fine - I'm just not proficient enough to search in the language, myself.

Стёша would actually be feminine, normally; it's a nickname form of a rare name Степанида.

You must've been thinking of Стёпа, short for Степан.

I don't know about dictionaries of nicknames, but you can always google the name and look for the context it's used in.
