объявлять vs. заявлять

Hi everyone,

What is the difference between объявлять and заявлять?

As far as I can tell, they both mean "to declare, to announce". Can they simply be used interchangeably or are there subtle differences I should be aware of?

Roughly speaking, the difference is similar to the one between "proclaim" and simply "claim".

I'd rather say that the difference is deeper - like between "to declare / to announce" and "to make a statement". They also require different prepositions and, generally speaking, behave differently in a proposition.

In usage:

Правительство Галактической Империи объявляет войну Старой Республике. (The Government of the Galactic Empire [therefore] proclaims war with the Old Republic)
Старая Республика заявляет, что правительство Галактической Империи состоит из идиотов. (The Old Republic [therefore] announces that the Government of the Galactic Empire consists of idiots.)

These words are quite different.
Заявлять is widely used for declarations, made by official persons im media or at some public meetings. Also the word may mean some claim - of rights, intentions and so on.
Объявлять is used to declare changes in some public service or treatment of subordinate subject. Заявлять addresses to someone higher or equal.

Папа объявил, что теперь каждое утро будет варить кашу. Сын заявил, что не будет её есть. - Papa declared, that he will make porrige each morning, son stated he won't eat it.

Объявлять can be used with instrumental case, meaning "to state that X is Y now", заявлять is not used so.

Well, in your example son definitely "заявил", but father could both "объявил" and "заявил, что каждое утро будет варить кашу".
The meaning would be slightly different though, "announced" vs. "stated".

Yes, he could, but I guess, if papa uses his credantials as a head of family, he can only объявлять. Заявить may be in some cases like:
- Mama asked papa to make some more diverse food, but papa states, that he'll make only porrige. (He dares not obey her)
- Papa has declared that he will make porrige, but today he failed and made sandwiches (He's subject of his inefficiency in cooking)

I think that the extent of difference between them is close to that between "to declare" and "to announce". In many cases they can use interchangeably, but there are some idiomatic uses that you have to memorise like объявлять войну, заявлять в полицию о преступлении, объявить перерыв, заявить права.

Not quite. There is logic :>
Заявить о нарушениях, заявить о преступлени (make statement about violations / crimes) is used when you inform the police or whoever about your opinion that there has been a violation.
Объявить о нарушениях/преступлении implies it's a fact, it was investigated and proven and now you make it known.

Заявить права means you demand your rights to be respected.
Объявить о правах is more likely to be said about an official body publishing or declaring a statement of rights or some similar document. Or, maybe, someone saying to their friends, "I can drive now, look, I've just got my driver's license!"

объявить - to make announcement; to make publically known
заявить - to make a statement.

Заявить is always about your opinion.
1. Правительство объявило о реформе образования. (The Government announced reforms in education) 2. Оппозиция заявила, что это незаконно. (The opposition insisted it was illegal)

In 2. you can also use "объявить" but it'd shift the focus. Оппозиция заявила - they want you to know their opinion on the matter. Оппозиция объявила - they wanted you to know the fact (maybe it was a secret before that).

In 1. you can't use "заявить". "Правительство заявило о реформах образования" sounds like an incomplete statement. People would ask you to elaborate: what is it that thay stated about the reforms?

There is some difference.

I'd say, "объявлять" is mostly "advertise" or "announce", i.e. make some information public, like in "объявили посадку на самолёт", "объявили войну". You can't say "заявили посадку" or "заявили войну".

"заявлять" is "to make a statement", i.e. it's about more specific declarations, like in "подсудимый заявил, что признаёт свою вину" or "министр заявил, что никогда не брал взяток".

Though in some cases they can be used interchangebly, like "премьер-министр заявил о введении санкций" can also be "объявил".

In my opinion, заявлять means addressing to generally limited number of people (in most cases - to one man), объявить - to unlimited, but exceptions are available.

Заявлять:
to claim, to state, to file (a protest), to assert, to manifest, to apply (for participation)
