Translation difficulty

Dear community,

Would you help me to elegantly translate the following passage? The last sentence (in bold) I'm having particular trouble completely grasping. By the way, this is a quote by Russian film director Dmitry Mamuliia about his film "Another Sky."

Мы не делали картину о гастарбайтере. И мы не делали социальную картину…Я же хотел бы в дальнейшем…уйти от социальных тем, потому что подобные опознавательные знаки, которые можно достроить, являются неким грузом для искусства.

I was thinking something like "We did not make a film about the migrant worker, nor did we make a social film…In the future, I would like to depart entirely from social themes because such recognizable signs, which one can construct, are in fact a sort of burden in art."

The idea here is that the viewer can figure out what exact social problems film director is showing, and that, he thinks, hurts art.


So "construct" doesn't fit. Guess? Infer? See through? I'm not good at selecting English words.

Don't even try to translate his idiotic gibberish.

However, you're right: "достроить" has to do with the viewer's activity. "Such signs that the viewer might rethink/re-formulate/re-build/develop/re-develop/etc".

That last sentence is poorly phrased and a perfect example of pseudo-intellectual obfuscation, in my opinion. I had to re-read it a couple of times to understand it, and I'm a native speaker. It's no wonder you are having difficulty with it.

"Опознавательные знаки" means insignia but here the meaning is more like "signals" that can be "fleshed out in the viewer's imagination" and thus "weigh the art down."

That's Ok. I might be wrong but by "recognizable signs" (опозновательные знаки) he means "social themes" because "social issues" are being frequently discussed nowadays. That's why he calls them "recognizable" = "frequent", "modern", "up-to-date" etc.
I think that his generalizations sound rather vague in Russian as well as in English.
