I have a cultural question. Is Kniaz Bagration a very well-known figure in Russian history? He is referenced several times in the recent film "Yur'ev Den'" (2008) and I was wondering how common of a cultural hero he is. Thanks in advance!

He is known. There is even a subway station in Moscow named after him.

He is remembered as a heroic commander of the 1812 war with Napoleon, ranked in popular memory, I think, as the second after Kutuzov.

I don't think he is well-known.

Yes, absolutely — his name is a strong part of Russian patriotic context. One of key persons of Patriotic War 1812. The largest war operation of WW2 was called due to his name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bagration).

Yes, he is definitely well-known.

Bagration is definitely a well-known and well-esteemed figure in Russian history. Back in the day there used to be a pun based on his name: it was pronounced as "BOg rAti On", meaning "a god of battle is he".

A small correction. Since "рать" means "army", the pun is translated as "a God of army he is".

Рать can mean one or the other (note "ратиться", "идти на рать", etc.

Sorry

"Рать" can mean either army or battle/war. I find the latter meaning to be more appropriate in this case, as it suggests military prowess, not simply being liked by soldiers.

Yeah, he's pretty well-known. At least by those who pay any attention to history, but there are still enough of them, I believe. As a heroic commander of Patriotic War of 1812 his name is pretty big in patriotic and even nationalist discourse, even despite his Georgian ethnicity.

Most people with basic school knowledge of history would be able to recognise him as a hero of the Borodino battle and/or the war of 1812. However, not much further than that, i guess.

Indeed he is a well-know person in Russian history. Pyotr Bagrationi (Bagration) is the most known member of Georgia Royal Bagrationi Dynasty ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagrationi_dynasty ) as a folks hero of the Patriotic War (1812).

He was recognized and remembered as a hero even in USSR (Soviet Russia), e.g. one of Second World War's strategic plans was code-named "Bagration" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%86%D0%B8%D1%8F_%D0%91%D0%B0%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%BE%D0%BD ).

He is known well enough for being wounded to death at Borodino. Mostly people would scarcely know any more.

Yes, he is well-known and, in my opinion, widely recognized. Bagration was a real person, and lived about two centuries ago, so I wouldn't say he's a 'cultural hero', rather, a historic figure/personage. Just in case, probably it's just wording :)

I would say he is probably the second most-known hero of the war of 1812 (Napoleon's Great Army campaign against Russia), after Field Marshal Kutuzov.
And since this war (know as the Patriotic War in Russia) is one of the most well-celebrated episodes of Russian history, it puts him rather high.
I would say that Bagration as a historic person is associated in public mind with extraordinary bravery and daring. He's thought as a kind of commander who's no time for intrigue, tactics and all the military-science stuff, but who revels in action, in danger, etc, etc; and he is kinda unique in that sence, if you think of a person who's more daring than wise, Bagration will probably the first to pop in your mind.
