How would you say "body work" or "body repair" when talking about automobiles? 

Also, is the best word for a mechanic in Russian "mekhanik" or is it "mashinist"? Thanks!

also you can divide them by specialisation: моторист - mechanic working on engines, жестянщик - mechanic specialized only in body work, автоэлектрик - fixes electrical systems, etc

ps: "mashinist" - is totaly incorrect. in russian машинист - is a train driver :)

I'd like to notice that "кузовщина" is a slang and should not be used in "official" speech.

Not necessary. "Machinist" in Russian is also a general description of a technician working with complex machinery. For example «рефмашинист» or «машинист-электрик».

But it seems to me that it is rather special term and used more common in a professional or near-professional environment. I almost never heard it in everyday speech in this sense.
