CD learning programs

Hi guys,

I am looking for a program to learn Russian for a British guy (beginner). Rosetta Stone is very popular apparently but the reviews are pretty bad. I got a recommendation to look into Transparent Language but still not sure. Maybe somebody uses those CD learning programs and can advise something?

P.S. I just wonder, is there somebody in this community living on Cote d'Azur?

Hi, cd programs are not effective in most cases. My advice is to try find a teacher in BuddySchool web portal, and u receive live lessons. I've got only the positive experience using it. So, please, choose carefully your future teacher and do not afraid to make a mistake. ;)

I have been learning Dutch with Michel Thomas method course (CD set), and memrise.com (http://www.memrise.com) for vocabulary (only online version available). Both worked really well for me. They have Russian as well.

I'm learning Russian, so I can't say anything like "now that I have mastered it...." Anyway, I think it greatly depends on how you learn. I love the Rosetta Stone software. I think that it is pretty good for Russian. I also have a book that covers grammar ("The New Penguin Russian Course"). After I got through the first level of Rosetta Stone Russian I started on the Pimsleur course. I would definitely not recommend starting with Pimsleur. I've tried to learn languages with a tutor and in classroom settings and have found both to be much more difficult than with software, but again it depends on how you learn. The advice I've seen suggests using a bunch of different resources.

I would advise using livemocha.com instead. Not a CD, but very useful.
Also useful for beginners are Android apps by "Learn like kids".

Hi,
Please try Multitran free dictionary (i believe one of the best resources) http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=1&SHL=1. I think it's also helpful although it's not the teaching program you are looking for.
