This is not a grammar exercise, but an actual set of instructions for a linguistic experiment, so I'd like it to sound natural.

Ваши ответы нам поможет понять влияние свойств окружающего предложения на форму какого-нибудь слова. Так как одно задание трудно выполнять много раз, Вы выполните два типа заданий: заполнение пропусков в предложениях, и словесные ассоциации. Первое задание относится к нашему изучению; другое включенное, чтобы помочь Вам прояснить сознание после каждого предложения. Пожалуйста заполните пропуски в каждом предложении словами, данными в скобках. Старайтесь не думать слишком много; просто напишите наилучше звучащую форму слова. Потом прочитайте следующее слово и напишите первое слово, пришедшее Вам в голову.
Будет 144 предложения и 144 словестные ассоциации. Опрос продлится около часа и Вы получите 400 рублей. Thank you for your participation in this study! I am a graduate student at ХХХХ university, working with Professor XXXX, and I am studying Russian morphology. Your answers will help us understand how properties of the surrounding sentence can influence the form of a given word. Since it is difficult to complete one type of task many times in a row, you will complete two tasks: sentence completion and word association. The first task relates to our research; the second is included in order to help you clear your mind after each sentence. In each sentence, please fill in the blanks with the correct form of the word given in parentheses. Try not to think to hard; simply write the best sounding form of the word. Then read the following word and write down the first word that comes to mind.
There will be 144 sentences and 144 word associations. The survey will take about one hour, and you will be reimbursed 300 rubles. All data will be saved on a server and backed up on a separate computer, whose passwords only I and Professor XXXX know. Although we will collect IP addresses to confirm that each subject contributes only one set of answers, we will discard the IP address after this validation is complete. We will not collect any other identifying information.
Although we do not anticipate any discomfort arising as a result of your participation, if you want to quit at any time you can click on the “quit button”. When you have finished the survey, or after you click on the "quit" button, you will receive a code. Write down this code and return it to XXXXXXX to receive your reimbursement.

Your answers to our questionary will help us to understand on how properties of the surrounding sentence can influence the form of given word. Since it could be boring to complete one type of tasks many times in row, we are proposing two interchanging tasks: looking for a word to complete a sentence properly, and looking for the first association for given word.
Actually just the first task is related to our research; the second one we included in order to help you freeing your mind after each given sentence.
In each sentence please fill in the space with a valid form of the word provided in parentheses. Try to do that with no deep thinking, just type in the best sounding form of the word. Then read the following word and type in the first word that comes to your mind.
There will be 144 sentences and 144 word associations (Why do you need to see the 144th association?).
The survey will take about an hour, and you will be reimbursed 300 Rubles (yes, here or there is a misprint, so, if you read this in Russian, you should know we are promising 400 Rubles). The collected data will be saved at a server and backed up on a stand-alone computer; the passwords to data collections are known to my professor and me only. Although we will collect IP addresses (that is needed to confirm that each participant contributes once), we will discard the IP addresses after this validation is complete. We will not collect any other information considered being private.
We do not anticipate any discomfort arising as a result of your participation, however, you can quit at any time by a click on the “quit” button.
After answering the last of our questions you will receive a completion confirmation code. Please write this code down and return it to Professor Nn to receive your reimbursement.

Date: 2012-03-20 04:21 am (UTC)Мне однажды пришлось объяснять разницу между "нажать" (press and hold) и "клацнуть" (hit, press and release immediately). После этого мышкины щелчки называю не иначе, как клики.
А то иногда получается, как в анекдоте:
- Press any key.
- Вот эту можно?
- Oh, no! No! NO!!! Don't touch it! Hit Enter on your keyboard!

Date: 2012-03-20 04:39 am (UTC)Я предпочитаю объяснять через LMB, RMB, CMB, e.g. "single RMB", "triple LMB" и термин "кликать". По телефону так легче договориться, особенно когда есть и кнопки, и позунки, и галочки в check-боксах, и радио кнопки, и много чего другого.
Но это, вообзе говоря, неважно... было бы клиенту понятно.

Date: 2012-03-20 04:45 am (UTC)As to the point, I have no idea what LMB is, but there are, sort of, standard translations for UI-related stuff. кликать is OK for an informal text but I think it is out of place in an official document, especially since some people filling out the questionnaire may not be very well acquainted with modern computer-related jargon.

I do prefer to explain that using the LMB (Left Mouse Button), RMB (Right Mouse Button), CMB (Central one, i.e. the wheel), e.g. "single RMB" == "click RMB once", "triple LMB", and the term "кликать" == "to operate/engage a mouse button" (i.e. produce a "click" sound once, twice, etc). That is much easier when you are instructing a client over the phone, when there are "buttons", "scrolling bars", marks in check-boxes, radio-buttons, and so on.
That is not important in many cases... what is important - the operator|client should understand your instructions with no doubts.

Date: 2012-03-20 05:59 am (UTC)No doubts, trustfully. However, here is a description of an issue with Windows-7 installation, where the customer reports a message "hit a key":

When "hit delete to enter setup" comes up (before it asks me to hit any key to boot from the CD Drive) I can hit delete and get into the bios setup from BOTH keyboards yet 5 seconds later when it says to "hit any key to boot from the CD Drive" neither keyboard's keystrokes are recognized. I've changed the boot order so that the CD/DVD drive is first and 1) with the hard drive second then 2) with NO secondary boot device. Nothing changes, it always boots from the hard drive. Microsoft tech support couldn't help and the computer manufacturer couldn't help.

I do believe I saw similar instructions a way back in the, I guess, Windows 3.1 or Windows-95 times. There was a great difference between "press PF10 key" and "hit PF10 key" during the POST (Power On Self Test). That was in the user documentation for one of very first laptops I touched in my life. I do not remember the brand, there was a rainbow of brands, the laptops were delivered for some on-board testing. Could be even Siemens...

If this is going to be an online study and the only thing you are collecting is IP addresses (which you can't help, really, as those are logged on the server), you most likely do NOT need an IRB permission. Such studies do not count as involving "human subjects", at least not at my university. You should go with what your IRB says, of course, but it might be worthwhile to let them know that they have their heads up their asses if they are making you say this in a simple online questionnaire that collects no personally identifying information :)

In that version, the 144th association is supposed to be a critical trial, and I'm just keeping the stimulus lists the same.)
