learn_russianHello! Happy new year to everyone (I haven't posted since the new year so there you have it). I am having some difficulty with a few sentences in this article. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Просят только одно: "не надо нас снимать, позорить." (What I understand from this sentence is that it loosely translates to "They only ask one thing: "Don't shoot us" but how does 'позорить' come into play? I know it's the verb "to shame", or am I wrong?)
На кадрах оперативной съемки видно, как их задерживают пограничники. (Context wise, this is the paragraph this sentence finds itself in: Этих девушек вели нараванными путями через египетско-израильскую границу. Верблюжьими тропами они прошли через Синай. На кадрах оперативной съемки видно, как их задерживают пограничники. Среди арестованных погонщиков - один араб и два выходца из восточных республик СНГ.)
Тюрьму в Хидере хочется назвать уютной. (Context: Тюрьму в Хидере хочется назвать уютной. Здесь вызволенные из страшных дискретных квартир девушки ожидают своей участи. Увидев оператора, они прячут лица. Никто из них, конечно, не думал, что путешествие на край света закончится вот таким образом. Они мечтали о богатых шейхах и восточной сказке. Конец именно этой сказки все-таки можно считать благополучным - ведь им удастся вернуться домой.)
And last one!
У каждой - своя, холодящая душу история. Would I be wrong in translating this as "Each has their own chilling story."?

Date: 2012-01-23 09:37 pm (UTC)2. First of, "нараванными" is most likely a typo, it should be "караванными", meaning, via the caravan paths. You sentence in bold means "It is seen/visible on the film/record how they are being arrested by the border guards". "Оперативная съёмка" means the recording/shooting done, for example, by police or military. "Кадры съёмки" is a typical euphemism for 'record', or 'film'.
3. "The jail in Khider is almost cozy/homey" (Literally, "One would want to call the jail cozy". It explains that the conditions in this jail are relatively comfortable, especially in comparison to the previous conditions the women had been kept in. I am also puzzled with "дискретных" - in my view, the correct word should be "сeкретных", secret (i.e., hidden apartments).
This paragraph explains the meaning of the N1 - the women that are kept in this jail are most likely the sex slaves. They've been caught by police, but at least freed from their ex-owners. They don't want to be filmed because they perceive the situation as very shameful.
4. Yep, you are right, it's "chilling story" (literally, "the story that makes your soul could/frozen", a typical expression in Russian).
