dates when something happens

Over time I've somehow forgotten how to express when something happens with dates. 

I know there are two ways -- в + accusative case  OR  genitive case without a preposition: 

во второе июля...

втогоро июля...

When is each used?

I (and I'm quite sure most NSs) wouldn't use the first construction with dates at all. It's fine if it's used with days of the week or time ('во вторник' or 'в три'), but not dates.

"во второе июля" is wrong. You can say "Сегодня второе июля." or "Сегодня, второго июля, (something happened)."

I see only one correct version for "во второе июля" - "Дверь во второе июля" (like Robert Heinlein book "The Door into Summer") или "Вернуться во второе июля".

I use only the second with dates. and the first is used with days of the week:
второго июля but в понедельник

with exact date-of-month genitive is used:
* я вернусь второго июля (я вернусь первого-второго числа)
with day of week в + accusative:
* я вернусь в пятницу
otherwise в + prepositional:
* я вернусь в первых числах июля (= 1...10 jul)
* я вернусь в июле следующего года
* я вернусь в следующем году
except special cases:
* весной, летом, осенью, зимой (ins. case)
* на (этой/следующей/прошлой) неделе

Apparently, you remember that both these uses are linked to moments in time somehow, but you totally forgot how exactly. :)

в + accusative case + date = WRONG!
genitive case of the date = correct.

but

genitive case of the day of the week = WRONG
в + accusative case + day of the week = correct.

So, "во вторник" and "в пятницу", but "второго июля" and "тринадцатого сентября".
Also, "во вторник, второго июля" or "в пятницу, тринадцатого сентября".
