Washing machine words

Hi,
I am living in an apartment in Donetsk and I don't know what the words are on my washing machine. I tried looking them up in my dictionary and they aren't in there.

Could any one tell me what these mean? I don't want to guess and then break my landlord's machine.

слив
полоскание + отжим

Отжим — Wringing/spinning
Слив — Discharge (of dirty water)
Полоскание — Rinse.

Is the machine automatic, or the old type, with the separate washer and spinner?

I honestly have no idea. It has 15 buttons and I have to select one, lol. Thanks for your help!

Automatic washing machines have one big drum that serve as both washer and spinner/wringer. But there was an older type, where the washer tub was separate from the spinner, and you had to manually transwer the wet laundry from the tub into the spinner to wring the water out.

You're thinking of a wringer-washer. It would be really obvious if it was one--the wringer was usually on the top and had a hand-crank on one side, and you'd run your clothes through (Carefully to not break buttons) it before hanging on a line. Ah, good days of my childhood before my parents started taking clothes to a laundromat :)

No, wringer-washer is a different kind of machine. I was meaning the semi-auto, with separate washer and spinner and no wringer. You had to hook the hose to your tap, put another to the drain, and when you're done with the washing/rinsing you'd take those enormous wooden clamps and drag all your laundry from the washer to the spinner, then turn it on and lay with all your weight onto the top, so the machine won't walk all over the bathroom. ;)

отжим -> отжимать белье == to wring out the washing
слив -> сливать воду== to pour water out
полоскание -> полоскать == to rinse
