Does anybody know of some good resources for official-business style of writing for learners of Russian? I am taking the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language on Wednesday and Thursday (!), and this is the part that is tripping me up the most since every time I have had to write something "official," I've had a friend fix it up for me. I will have to write a short composition, as well as answer a few multiple-choice questions about this style.

Well, the official style of Russian do exist, but I seriously don't recommend even getting close to it unless you're absolutely sure in your command of the "normal" language. Cantselyarit tends to rob people of their linguistic skills. But I don't think that you will need it on the TRFL test. Just don't use what you feel is informal or colloquial.

Well, I don't need to write a legal contract or something for it. I need to know how to write a basic заявление (that is in the grammar/lexicon part), and then the writing section has one composition has one composition of "official business character." The example tests I have have 1) a complaint against a tourist agency and b) a request to a director of a firm for an invitation to Russia for a 1-month internship, and you're supposed to also argue why you should get it, or something.

It's actually very different from English. The Russian style of this kind of business writing comes off as rude and the American style comes off as sycophantic to Russians. So I have a hard time finding the right balance in Russian. I also can't find the textbook for this section of the test anywhere, so all I have to go on are the example tests that have no example of how the compositions should read.

In that case it's just better to google up some templates' set like this -- http://www.delopis.ru/. Ans as for stylistic tips -- in Russian the preferred official style is very impersonal, even robotic, and devoid of any emotional touch. It eschews any pleasantries and niceties and just bluntly states the facts, so it indeed can be seen rude to English speaker. So just try to write like an annoyed robot, and you may have the right tone. ;)
