Normally, I'm pretty good at sounding things out and eventually getting the pronunciation correct - even if it takes me a few times.

And then I stumbled across this phrase in my studies:

встречаться с затруднениями
"to encounter difficulties"

I simply cannot say this phrase no matter how hard I try. It's the prepositional portion that ties me up.

I found it somewhat humorous that I was "encountering difficulties" saying that "I was encountering difficulties."

Seriously now - even you native Russians have to find this difficult to say. I wish I could hear somebody say it.

Which got me to wondering. Is there anywhere on the internet where you can import a phrase/sentence and have it spoken back to you? I know there are audio dictionaries that read back individual words - but I'm wondering if there is something like a more comprehensive Russian reader. I would like to hear somebody say "с затруднениями."

I think I'll stick with ... Мне трудно. :)

С is not pronounced, but together with з makes some prolonged ЗЗ consonant.
(ф)СТРЕЧАЦАЗЗАтруднен(ь)ями is what I actually pronounce here. No big deal, is it?

Note also that we Russians do not articulate A as open as other (civilized:) nations do. You may find it dfficult to pronounce this ЧАЦЦАЗЗА thing because you're trying to articulate a full-blown A each time - you don;t have to. Much less jaw clicking, that is.

It's a common illusion that "relaxing his vocal apparatus" would help a foreigner achieve proper pronunciation :)

sorry, WHAT do you pronounce? :)))))))

I mean, I pronounce the same, sure, but the written 'transcription' made my day 8))) sounds hilarious :)))

ps. dear topic starter, I can add nothing more as pronunciation peculiarities already perfectly covered here for you. I would just rewrite it like "встречаться з затруднениями" As simply as that, no big deal :) no pause between the preposition and the noun :) this looks much easier, doesn't it? :)

I would also add that Russian writers/redactors usually try to avoid using such phonetically awkward constructs even in a written text. I would rather insert some auxiliary word in between, like
встречаться с ОПРЕДЕЛЕННЫМИ затруднениями
встречаться с НЕКОТОРЫМИ затруднениями
to ensure euphonic alternation of vowels and consonants

Likewise, in English, you probably think twice before writing smth like VORACIOUS MOTHS THREATEN CROPS, which many would ВСТРЕЧАТЬСЯ С ЗАТРУДНЕНИЯМИ trying to articulate.

It would sound (in conversation, when you don't need to be ultimately clear) just as "ззатруднениями". Voiced consonant use to make consonant before them voiced too, and there is no pause after a vowelless preposition.

Aye, but I guess she is a touch too careful with the first В and ЗЗ sounds. Normally, they are shorter, В almost disappearing.
The tool is OK, though.

you can separate this phrase to simple parts i.e. встреча+ться (tsia) c (first sound from word something) за+труд+не+ниями

and you can practice with russian tongue-twisters http://www.wonderlang.ru/tonguetwisters/russkie-skorogovorki/russkie-skorogovorki.html

столкнуться с проблемами sounds more natural to me.

Heeere you go: http://yk4ever.org/dir/zatrudneniya.mp3

BTW, it's really sounds somewhat awkward, too official. "Столкнулся с проблемами", "испытал трудности" would be just as good.

[фстр'ич'аца сзатрудн'эн'иим'и] предлог "С" практически не произносится, он сливается с "З".

Это регрессивная ассимиляция, обычное явление для русского языка. Звонкий [з] ассимилирует предшествующий глухой [с], в результате вместо [сз] произносится долгий [з].
То же самое - "с другом" [здру...].

"Is there anywhere on the internet where you can import a phrase/sentence and have it spoken back to you?"

Actually, there is. It is on http://forvo.com

But this specific case shouldn't be hard at all, because "с" in "с затруднениями" is pronounced as "з", not "с". you just make "з" sound a bit prolonged - ззатруднениями, or you may even skip the preposition

encountering difficulties

I found it somewhat humorous that I was "encountering difficulties" saying that "I was encountering difficulties."
Cиноним слова «затруднение» - слово «сложность».
Synonym of the word «difficulty» - the word «complexity».

Слово «сложность» более часто встречается.
The word «complexity» is more common.

Форма множественного числа этих слов более часто встречается: «сложности», «затруднения».
Plural form of these words is more common: the «complexity», «difficulties».

По смыслу означает «препятствие», но не материальное, а абстрактное, например «Препятствие для выполнения работы.»
Implicity mean abstract «obstacle» (not material «obstacle»), for example, "Hurdle for the work."

Неправильное предложение: «Я встретил затруднения». Косвенно значит, что я поздоровался с затруднениями :-)
Incorrect sentence: «I met difficulties». Implicitly mean that I shook hands with difficulties :-)

Correct sentences:
Правильные предложения:
«Мне встретились затруднения». Значит, что возникли препятствия, когда я выполнял какую-то работу.
«I encountered difficulties». Means that any obstacles, when I was doing some work.

«Мне встречались затруднения». Значит, что многократно возникали препятствия, когда я выполнял какую-то работу.
Means that multiple hurdles encountered when I was doing some that work.

Предложение «Мне встречались затруднения» по форме построения похоже на:
The sentence «I encountered difficulties.» in the form of building something like this:

Когда я ехал по дороге, мне встречались поваленные деревья.
When I drove down the road, I saw the fallen trees.

Поэтому полный вариант будет такой:
Therefore, the full version would be:

«Когда я выполнял работу, мне встречались затруднения.»
«When I was doing the work, I encountered difficulties.»

Это абстрактное выражение применяется, когда не нужно детально говорить, какие именно были препятствия и как именно они повлияли на выполнение работы.
This is an abstract sentence is applied, there is no need to speak in detail, what were the obstacles and how they affected the performance of work.

P.S. My english must have been not so good, but russian is OK. :-)

Okay, now that's a payback for all those English "sixth" and "twelfth" :)

Seriously, don't try to pronounce both 'с' and 'з'. Say it as a prolonged 'з'. Like 'ззатруднениями'.

I think you should know this is an example of the regressive assimilation which is very common and only possible in Russian. I mean that the following consonant always affects the preceding one, and never vice versa. In this particular case [z] affects [s]: the voiceless [s] becomes voiced [z], so one should pronounce a long [z] instead of combination [sz] which is absolutely impossible in Russian.

Other examples of the regressive assimilation (underlined sounds are long):

из дома [zd]
из стола [s]
от дома [d]
от стола [ts]
под домом [d]
под столом [ts]

In fact the [ts] combination sounds [ц], so you may have noticed the phonetic spelling "пацталом" which uses the "Ц" affricate.

Try to learn it in syllables and then glue together:

стри-ча-цца-зза-труд-нень-и-ми

This phrase has poetical meter also, which can be useful :)

стри-чА-
цца-ззА-
труд-нЕнь-
и-мИ

If you know the song 'В лесу родилась ёлочка', use it as a pattern.
