Hello everybody!
Do anybody know how to say (write) in Russian: 4th (5th, 20th etc.) great grandfather?
прапрапрапрадед doesn't hears good.

Please note that this community is not exactly oriented on native Russian speakers who seek to improve their language skills -- it's rather for those non-natives who study Russian as a foreign language. Maybe it's better to try [livejournal.com profile] pishu_pravilno instead.

As for your question, there is nothing wrong with "прапрадед" and even "пра-пра-прадед", but going back for more than five generations this formula becomes really weird. Maybe it's better to put it as "мой предок в N поколении".

I think you can say "Предок в N-м (пятом, шестом, двадцатом) поколении/колене" ("Ancestor in the N (fifth, sixth) generation".

when N doesn't matter - just "прапрадед" or even "прадед"

Great word! Never knew its meaning despite speaking Russian natively. :) But it gets even better when you start translating it into other languages. Found a few nice variants in Spanish. :)

When N doesn't matter, it could be also just "предок", but it has more general and broad sense.
For example a great grandmother is предок too.
