can someone please explain to me the difference between обработка and переработка? the English definition given with both is "treatment, processing", but i sense of course that the two prefixes give slightly different connotations. my guess is that пере- is changing a material into something else entirely; Yandex gives the example переработка отходов — (waste) recycling. (and conversationally, переработка can also mean overtime [overwork]) and об- refers to mechanical/light chemical processing that doesn't change the inherent nature of the material, just its organization (обработка данных/почты/заказа — data/mail/order processing). заранее спасибо.
p.s., this is why i <3 Russian.

Date: 2010-02-07 10:00 pm (UTC)Переработка is something that changes the qualities of the process or product completely. Literally it's "rework." Processed meat, like meatballs, has undergone переработка. A completely rewritten new edition of something, heavily edited, and added to, would be переработанное издание in Russian. Etc.
There is also a second, more obscure meaning for переработка - "overwork." "He has completed his regular shift, plus two hours overwork" = Он закончил обычную смену плюс два часа переработки.

Thank you
