Я приеду к тебе надолго. (it means that I intend to come and see you. And I will stay at your home (with you) for a long time. i.e. I will have a plane to stay with you for a long time)

Я буду жить у тебя долго (it is closer to a statment that I make a decision to stay at your home (with you).)

Grammatically, надолго requires perfective verb, while долго requires an imperfective.

Он долго молчал (he was silent for a long time).
Он надолго замолчал (he went silent for a long time).

In general, надолго has a narrower meaning than долго: the latter can describe any prolonged period of time, while the former serves only as a clarification that the period is, indeed, a long one. I can think of many occasions when only one of this pair can be used, while the other cannot be use at all and one has to re-form the sentence to use the other one:

Многие достижения античной науки были надолго забыты после наступления Средних веков.
(Many accomplishments of the classical science were forgotten for a long time when Middle ages came.)

I think надолго typically implies longer than unusual/expected.
Also, it normally is used with perfective forms of verbs, whereas долго normally works with the imperfective. I think this may be further clarified.

=долго requires an imperfective= wrong: проживу долго, живу долго. But: Приехал жить надолго. Поселился надолго. Here, indeed, a perfective is needed.

Basically, приехал к тебе жить надолго = приехал, чтобы жить у тебя долго. However, in the first sentence the adverb relates to приехал, in the second one - to жить.

How about this way…

"Надолго" means "for a long time" by itself and in terms of timeline correlation it has a distinct geometrical-ray-likeness. This "long time" implied has a beginning but not the end.

"Мы пришли во власть! И мы здесь надолго!" ~ "Now we're the authority! And this will last!"


"Долго" contains a simple characteristic of some process mentioned or implied nearby in the speech or text. Slowliness, time-consumption, lengthiness time-wise.

"Они пришли во власть? Что ж, долго они не протянут." ~ "They've got the power? Well, they won't last long."

"Что-то вы долго думаете перед ответами. Вы точно готовились?" ~ "You're kind of slow with your answers. Are you sure you studied?"

I love questions like this. Each time I feel like that centipede who could walk until it was asked how.

My intuition tells me that "надолго" is used with verbs (explicit or implicit - see examples) that are (a) in the perfective and (b) describing something that has already started and will continue for some time in the future. Like pinky_the_cow said, there is a beginning but no definite end.

For example:
1. Я застрял в этом городе надолго. - I am/I got stuck in this town for a while.
2. Это надолго. - This is going to last. (Whatever "this" may be. Here, the verb - something like "установилось" or "пришло" - is implied).

"Долго" is for everything else.

More precisely, "долго" is for describing actions that:
(a) have lasted long in the past (finished);
(b) have been lasting long up to now (currently ongoing);
(c) will last long (with the verb describing action not yet started, unlike with "надолго");
(d) habitually last long.

Examples:
(a) Перед тем, как сдавать экзамен, я долго готовился. - I prepared for a long time before taking the exam.
(b) Он уже долго болеет. - He has been ill for a long time now.
(с) Они ещё долго будут выяснять, кто прав, а кто виноват. - They will be figuring out who is to blame for quite some time yet.
(d) Она всегда долго собирается. - She always takes a long time to get ready.

all verbs in Russian are divided into two groups: imperfective (несоврешенные - что делать?) and perfective (совершенные - что Сделать?)

долго = долгий срок = долгий период = long time period

надолго = НА долгий срок = НА долгий период = НАдолго (as short form) = for long time

Ты ПРИедешь надолго? = Ты ПРИедешь НА долгий срок? - Ты едешь долго?

Мы Уходим НАдолго = мы идем долго

Собрание ЗАтянется НАдолго? Да, НА несколько часов
Собрание тянется долго? Да, уже несколько часов
