Due to an unprecedented attack of porno spam bots, the community will function in premoderated membership and premoderated posting mode from now on and until further notice. Basically this means that when you post something, your posting gets into a queue and is published when a moderator approves it. For those who wants to join the community, their requests likewise will get into a queue awaiting moderator's approval. Thank you for your understanding.

THANK YOU for doing something. The same godawful porn has taken over all the Russian-language communities I belong to. Not only is it annoying to those of us who don't swing that way, it's not exactly what I want popping up on my monitor at work.

As fsi said, the comments are not premoderated. (I don't think it's even physically possible unless both moderators resign from their day jobs to scrutinize each comment individually.)

Well, that's right decision to prevent spam, but experience of maintaining our community ru_japan says that premoderated membership is the only thing that needs.

Unfortunately, this is not so. This might be true for the particular community you mentioned, but the truth is that many bots are created well beforehand and join all the communities they can, before striking them all at once. If you are curious, read moderatorial. They discover a dozen or more bots daily who have been created several months ago and have sneaked into several hundred communities.

Particular? I don't think so, not more particular than your's. Japan now is very popular and now we have more than four thousand members and a lot of requests every day to join community from real people.

So we have no any spam after making moderated membership. Just using service like this (http://astra-c.com/lj/nobot/index.php) and permanent ban of users with names like jiaoxzsn, gfchjigrzyld, oiucazskzirm, etc. prevents our community from any spam activity.

Btw:

This utility just searches the names of known bots in the list of community members. That's pretty dumb because, as I said, there may be unknown robots who have not yet manifested themselves as such.
