I'm aware of the collective forms: двое, трое, четверо, пятеро, шестеро, и семеро.

What are the collective forms for

Do such forms exist?

such forms exist (the dictionary says so), but, from my experience, are rarely used.

Девятеро and десятеро are fine, but восьмеро somehow sounds awkward to me. I'd rather say их было восемь then их было восьмеро. Их было девятеро sounds normal on other hand. Quite a thin matter, not a mistake say восьмеро, I guess ^_^'.

Not a mistake indeed, but I've never seen it used. Maybe it's because 7 and 9, being the fairy-tale magic numbers, are the only ones greater than four in wide use, especially in fairy tales, fantasy, and "heroic" literature/movies: "Семеро смелых", "Девятеро уже покинули Мордор и ищут Хоббитон" etc.

"в восьмером" употребимо, и отдельно не используется
"вдевятером, вдесятером" - гораздо более употребительные варианты

sounds awkward, right, but might be used in some contexts. although i also try to avoid such constructions.

I think not. But... For example, you may use

I've never heard such things as "восьмеро, девятеро, десятеро" in my life. Neither "ввосьмером"... I think in this case it's common to use "вдевятером" and "вдесятером".
