I have a couple of questions:

1. Do you know better/worse examples of 'Russians' in Hollywood movies (in terms of language)?
2. Do they employ consultants for every foreign language to be dealt with or not?

I haven't seen it for some time, but I don't remember being too impressed with the Russian spoken in "Red Dawn."

I did think the Russian in "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" was pretty good.

I would consider that the Russian speaking dead guy from the first Hellboy is the worst example by far. The thing about him, thought, is that the filmmakers were no even trying to use real words; they just made it sound like Russian.
If we look just at "real Russian" monologs I would have to say that the first Tomb Raider (about "кратера метеора") should take the prize.
The second prize takes "The Boondock saints". They do have Russian speaking actors, but the monologues still make no sense.
I feel that "The sum of all fears" deserves special mentioning. Ciarán Hinds did an excellent job, and even thought his Russian is far from perfect, I appreciate the effort. This movie is also pretty unique as it makes distinction between Russian and Ukrainian.

1. Only Russian native speakers are speaking well in Hollywood movies (AFAIK).
2. I highly doubt they do it for Russian language. Generally, "Russians" in American movies are done badly, much worse than English speaking people in Russian movies.

As far as i know, Hollywood's 'russkies' always speak heavily accented (and usually grammatically incorrect)Russian. There are very few exceptions. E.g. Russian barmen from Casablanca (1942), general from the 'Lord of war' (2005) and soviet partisans from the 'Defiance' (2008). May be, the explanation is that the actors were Russians. I don't know if any English or American can play a role of russian without looking silly.

The last movie with "Russians" I can think of was The Golden Compass, and everything was pretty good in there. The "Russian" guards in the North Pole all spoke excellent Russian (the English subtitles often provided quite an inexact translation, by the way). Guess the situation is improving little by little. :)

I think it's not Hollywood, but "Eastern Promises" made that distinction as well. The Russian accents sounded inauthentic to me, but I don't have a native's ear.

I can't vouch for any of these, but this article (http://www.readrussia.com/magazine/fall-2007/00040/) gives its own take on fake (and real) Russians in cinema. Also, Eastern Promises, which was a British film, sounded okay to this non-Russian ear.

The article seems very interesting and useful.
You are the first non-native speaker to comment on the topic so far (as far as I know). What I'm indignant about is not really the accent, as it's difficult to master, but the impending errors, which could be easily eradicated had the film directors employed decent consultants.

Wow! How cute! The poor idiots seem to really believe that switching keyboard layout should place cyrillic equivalents under each latin letter. I was that naive when I was like 5 years old.

+1. It was absolutely awful. Interesting that other not-so-important characters were native Russians and spoke Russian fine. If I was making that movie I wouldn't let Cate Blanchett speak Russian at all. I would make her mute if it was an absolute must that she was to play the role. :)
