Hi guys,

I have a few last questions, before my Russian final tomorrow.

1.  Whats the difference between с / до and с / по when expressing dates, ie

Мы будем в Москве с десятого до двадцать пятого июня and

Мы будем в Москве с десятого по двадцать пятое июня.

Also, can someone explain to me the difference between these statements in english?

МГУ был основан в 50-х годах 18 века.

В 20-е годы Пушкин написал огромное количество стихов.

В 60-е и 70-е годы 19 века Чайковский написал свои лучшие произведения.

В 80-х годах 19 века Толстой был уже известным писателем.

Thanks again, in advance!

Well the first question is tricky...

The second one...

As I see, in the examples В NN годы stands when many /repeated/ things happened, and в NN годах for one /important/ event.

Gonna check this up in grammar references, I'll be back with the result. )

1. The meanings are equal, though the "по" variant is way better.
2. "В X-(ы)е годы" means that several events took place in different years during the mentioned period, while "в X-(ы)х годах" means that a certain event took place/a certain status was maintained in a certain time, chosen from the named period.
Hope I clarified something :)

I would say there is no (or almost no) difference between с / до and с / по
Maybe с / по is more colloquial while с / до has come from written papers like forms and questionnaires.

As for your second question I suppose that the difference you mean is in use of годы/годах. I suggest that if you are speaking of something that happened only once you use в ** годах and if something was repeated several times or took a long time you use в ** годы. But to my mind these two usages are also widely interchangeable.

Btw, when talking about time, not dates, you should always use с / до.

1. a) Мы будем в Москве с десятого до двадцать пятого июня and
b) Мы будем в Москве с десятого по двадцать пятое июня.

a) is a conversational form. До should be used if the first 'opening' date is not specified: Мы будем в Москве до двадцать пятого июня.

2. a) МГУ был основан в 50-х годах 18 века.
b) В 20-е годы Пушкин написал огромное количество стихов.
c) В 60-е и 70-е годы 19 века Чайковский написал свои лучшие произведения.
d) В 80-х годах 19 века Толстой был уже известным писателем.

a) and d) are also conversational. The b) and c) form is correct, and should be used in each of the four cases.

Seems like по means that the following date is included in the period, while до means that the following date is not included.

Also speaking about hours (not days or years) people use mostly до NN часов (genetive required) and the time following до means the time when the period is over.

Send both questions to gramota.ru, the resource I trust a lot, and I'll be back with their answer tomorrow about this time.

This is how I learned the first one:

с means "from"
до means "up to" (like verbs of motion)
по means "through"

Thus:

a) Мы будем в Москве с десятого до двадцать пятого июня
We will be in Moscow from the 10th to the 25th of June.
b) Мы будем в Москве с десятого по двадцать пятое июня.
We will be in Moscow from the 10th through the 25th of June.

1. If you use the form с/до (с 10 до 25 июня) - up to/untill 24 of june
In case of с/по (с 10 по 25 июня) - the last day is included, you'll be in Moscow
But don't mind, you can use both :)

Past simple.

В 20-е годы Пушкин написал огромное количество стихов.
В 60-е и 70-е годы 19 века Чайковский написал свои лучшие произведения.
It's continious.
