Hey wonderful Russian forum people,

A famous quote is attributed to Stalin-- "I trust no one, not even myself." I like to bark it at my students, followed by an "EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER COMRADE!" when I see them glancing at each other's quizzes.

I was wondering what the Russian translation of this is. Maybe it's this? (my horrific
translation follows)

Веру в никого, ни даже своего.

I guess nobody is to be trusted in quoting Stalin...he was such an idol in the USSR that lots of sayings are attributed to him although he never said anything like that at all. I believe this is just the case - this could easily be said by anyone else.

The phrase is attributed to Stalin in late years, shortly before his death, and actually attributed by Khrushchev, so it means:

1. The source is in no way a reliable one.
2. If Stalin had really said this phrase, it meant only a bitter disappointment of an old man, and not of a politician.

Hm, strange but i've never heard of this quoute at all.
I'd recommend barking "No human - no problem" at them, which is much more stalinistic and funny :)
In original it was "Нет человека - нет проблемы".

Well, as you can see, there is not even a single word mentioning Stalin in my comment. I dont think he would really go around saying such things in public, hehe.

RyBakov, of course. And, BTW, "human" means a human being in general. In the aforementioned quote it's better to say "No man means no problem", as it's a certain known person implied, not any Joe E. Random.

Actually, I say "No human, no problem" all the time-- normally as a way to cheer myself up after reading something depressing in the news.
