Verb stem mutations question
Apr. 28th, 2009 06:57 pmI read about the following pattern:
If the letter Г, з, or Д precedes the stem vowel, then the consonant mutates to a ж. In a first conjugation verb, the mutation occurs in all forms, but in 2nd conjugation verbs the mutation is in 1st person singular only.
However, the verb обедать does not follow the pattern, where as видеть does follow the pattern. Is обедать just an exception or am I missing something?

Date: 2009-04-29 07:32 am (UTC)For the second conjunction (first-person singular form) the last consonant of the stem (infinitive without "ить") changes as follows:
д > ж (ходить - хожу, BUT ходишь, ходим, ходите, ходит, ходят)
з > ж (возить - вожу)
c > ш (носить - ношу)
ст > щ (чистить - чищу)
т > ч (крутить - кручу)
б, в, м, п, ф > бл, вл, мл etc. (рубить - рублю, давить - давлю, копить - коплю)
