Learn Russian - exercise book

Hi everybody!
I need your help. Can you recommend me which exercise book I can give as a present to my friend from England who wants to study Russian? He is a beginner, but a very smart one - so I think I need to find an interesting exercise book, which he can start with.
Would appreciate any assistance and if there are any electronical versions of the books - would be cool to get the links!))
