My supper of vareneki and sour cream got me thinking...

Is there a Russian equivalent for the term "comfort food"
or "soul food", food you eat when you're sad
or stressed out.

заедать стресс - to eat when you're stressed out, negative meaning.
для души - anything for soul, also: душевный
for example a shop "Для душа и души" - "For shower and soul"
"Душевно пообщались" - about nice and comfort meeting...

I can't remember any special and positive words for comfort food...

it's interesting there isn't, since so many in
canada - including us in the ukrainian diaspora -
consider such things to be comfort foods (vareniki,
borscht, holubtsi...)

well, the BEST vareniki are cooked from scratch.
the next best is frozen from the store :P

Yeah, right. They call them pierogi here (I shudder every time I see that) and stuff them with everything except what they're supposed to be stuffed with.

And my husband is forced to buy salo in a Chinese supermarket. There is some globalization joke somewhere in it.

           Maybe we could translate нямка as cram? since it's filling, but both the taste and appearance leave so much to be desired. In case this is accepted, we'll only have to find an English equivalent of маянезик.
           BTW, нямка cooked by housewives (the "multi-storey" one smeared with маянезик and decorated (they wish) with grated сырик) isn't nearly as horrific as нямка cooked by die-hard males: tourists, fishermen, hunters, dachnikis. The latter usually consists of тушенка or canned fish mixed with instant mashed potatoes, бомжпакет, cold macaroni that's been left after yesterday's family dinner, etc. Yuck.
