I often wonder in Russian conversation when to use "для того, чтобы" and when to simply use "чтобы". Are they interchangeable?

For instance, how would you say the following English phrases:

I went home to visit my father

She went to the store in order to buy milk

She writes poetry in order to better understand her own emotions

Both are possible. Для того чтобы sounds a little bit more formal.

Я пошел/поехал домой (чтобы) навестить/проведать отца.
Она пошла в магазин (чтобы) купить молока.
Она пишет стихи (для того,) чтобы лучше понять свои эмоции.
That is, in the first two cases, you may omit чтобы and while для того could be used there as well, it's too much, whereas in the last you need чтобы and it's pretty natural to prepend для того to it.

here the same rule as in English works: the longer the structure, the more formal it is)

Я поехал домой навестить/проведать отца.
Она пошла в магазин за молоком / купить молоко.
Она пишет стихи, чтобы лучше разобраться в своих чувствах. You can use "для того, чтобы" here, too; it's a bit more formal and thus more likely to occur in writing than in speech.

Note how the verbs of motion combine with a verb expressing purpose without even requiring the "чтобы" construction.
