I am trying to figure out what this phrase means (from Mayakovsky perhaps?):

Я планов наших люблю громадье

I found one web site that says "You won't find the word громадье in any dictionary!" ...But then it doesn't go on to tell me what it means.

Help?

"громадьё" actually means "too many" or "a mountain of"; that's a noun, formed from the "громадный" adjective. Often used when joking or speaking with sarcasm.))

A vast number (and huge scale) [of plans](from громадный).

It's a neologism. Громадье = Greating, i think.

Mayakovsky didn't mean irony.

It's quite common when something serious in original becomes ironical as an idiom.

He's not "pathetic" in any way ))) He is "pompous" and declamatory perhaps, but of course only the Soviet people could regard him as really serious.
Now (from the temporal distance) it is easier to see the irony and sometimes even pain he conveyed in the poems. But it is a question of literature, not pure linguistics.

The word is formed from громада, which is too physical and visual for Mayakovsky's purpose, so he forms neuter with the help of -ье suffix, that has additional collective nouns' flavour. Compare житьё, шитьё, мытьё, нытьё, бельё, - borrowing translation from Ancient Greek with its neuter plural - one can say it's about 'things that have something to do with... (living, sewing, washing, nagging, white cloth). So громадьё is 'something to do with grand, gigantic scale' of 'our plans'.

"Громада" is assocoated with the heap of clouds, the first thing, so the root adds
high, slightly celestial intonation to the description of the plans - even if man-made, as the -ьё suffix makes us feel.

Actually, Mayakovsky invented the word.

Yes, Mayakovsky invented the word like many others BTW. In plain words this line means "I love the greatness of our plans". Later on the word громадье and the line in general aquired some kind of ironic hue. When you'd line to ridicule someone's far-reaching and not-very-likely-to-materialize plans you may just say it: Я планов наших люблю громадью.
Another thing is that probably a substantial chunk of younger people (under 20 yo) would not understand you now. Unfortunately.
