Knitting--now with 50% more Russian!

I bought a great book called The Knitting Stitch Bible in Russian. I am an experienced stitcher, so I get the idea behind several of the words, but I am also trying to understand the Russian expressions they use.

The description for a knit stitch reads like this:
Лиц. ряды вязать лиц. п., изн. ряды--изн. п.

And the description for a purl stitch reads like this:
Лиц. ряды вязать изн. п., изн. ряды--лиц. п.

I found in the description, that лиц. stands for лицевые and изн. stands for изнаночные, but I don't really understand what the words mean--my Abby Lingvo failed me! :)

I also got that п. stood for петлями, which means "stitch." At least I got one out of three! And content! Hooray for symbols!

If I remember correctly, "лицевая петля" is a knit stitch, and "изнаночная петля" is a purl stitch.

Oh, sorry. My dictionary says that лицевая петля is а face stitch (but I somehow doubt this) and изнаночная петля is purl.

Sorry I can't be of any more help - I don't knit and don't know the words. People gave you some links to a manual with pictures. If you compare them with English knitting manuals you probably will be able to figure out which is which.

It's actually called a "knit stitch." I do knit, and I already know which is which. That wasn't the problem. I just don't understand how it's put together...

Face the row knit face stitches, knit-stitch line - knit stitch?

Is that what it says? That's why I was asking in this community--I was hoping someone was fluent in "knit speak" in both Russian and English. Like I said--I already knew the meaning, I just wanted the line literally translated.

No, I think you misinterpret the sentence structure.
There is something called лицевые ряды (literally, the rows that are on the face side of the cloth) and something called изнаночные ряды (literally, the rows that are on the back side of the cloth). The former you make with knit stitches and the latter you make with purl stitches. Then, in the other instruction, they change places.

лицевые ряды are right-side rows (the adjective is "лицевой" from the noun "лицо" - "face". So they're the rows that are the "face" of the fabric.) Conversely, изнаночные ряды are wrong-side rows.

So in fact the two descriptions you have are not for knit stitch and purl stitch, but for stockinette and reverse stockinette.
