Hello! My knowledge of Russian is rather basic at the moment and I just have a quick question.

If one were addressing someone, thanking them for their words, would it be correct to say: "Спасибо за ваши слова, мой друг"?

It is correct, but may be found a bit old-fashioned by some people. In my opinion, It`s perfectly correct.

To sound it old-fashioned you can say : Спасибо за ваши слова, товарищ!

It's absolutely correct, though the part 'мой друг' is slightly old-fashioned - to me 'Thanks for your words, my friend' sounds too solemn in english too) Just "Спасибо за ваши слова!" is OK.

First of all, it should be "Ваши" (capital "B"), because you refer to one person.

Also as for me "Спасибо за Ваши слова, мой друг" sounds a bit unfinished. It lacks adjective.I would rather say:
"Спасибо за Ваши теплые/добрые слова, мой друг" It is hard to find appropriate adjective not knowing the context, but I really think that it would sound better.

Depending on the context it could be:

"Спасибо за коплимент/похвалу, мой друг" (thank you for your compliment/praise)
"Спасибо за лестные отзывы, мой друг" (thank you for your flattering response)
"Спасибо за Ваши (теплые/сердечные/наилучшие) пожелания, мой друг" (thank you for your (warm/hearty/best) wishes)

Hm, it looks as if I'm the only person, who would consider "my friend"/"мой друг" overly familiar unless the speaker were my real friend.
But I really would.

BTW, I just thought that "Спасибо за Ваши слова, друг мой" would sound much more natural than "Спасибо за Ваши слова, мой друг".

"твои слова" would sould less official. In my opinion. You're supposed to be talking to your friend, after all.
