Could you recommend some very common and useful expressions in Russian? Unfortunately, I've never learned very many idioms and expressions and would like to learn more. For instance, things like:

делать из мухи слона

меньше знаешь, лучше спишь

одним ударом убить двух зайцев

In the movie "Brother" the brother of the main hero uses sayings all the time.

Also, lots of what you'd call "expressions" are not really sayings, but rather quotes - from movies, speeches of politicians, etc. See, for example, quotes from "12 chairs": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtyGZqcvSSg . I guess with time they do become sayings.

My favorite, by Viktor Chernomyrdin (stresses in red): "Мы хотли как лчше, а получлось как всегд".

This is the human condition encapsulated. "We wanted to do good but instead we did the usual."

I've always heard одним КАМНЕМ убить двух зайцев

Another good one - первый блин комом - close to "if at first you fail, try, try again"

Oh, also, с волками жить, по-волчьи (sp?) выть. Someone similar to "do as the romans do," but in a much darker sense, clearly.

The less dark version is "В чужй монастрь со свом уством не лезь!". It's closer to the English "when in Rome..." adage, IMHO.
