What's the difference between слышать и слыхать? I've seen слыхать used a lot in literature-- is it ever used in normal conversation? I am particularly interested in saying "Have you heard of that movie" or "Yes, I've heard of that author." and sometimes am tempted to say "Ты слыхала этот фильм" but do not know whether this sounds very formal and literary.  Thanks

Слыхать is more of an emotional expression
-- "Больше с тобой не дружу! - Слыхали?! Ну и ну!" whereas слышать is a neutral one.

Слышать is technically the more formal and literary word. But I've tried to put a stylistic label on "слыхать" and failed, it can be both rustic and a poetism, both archaic and something you may come across in a flow of crude contemporary speech... I guess every language has words with a stylistic signature that's puzzling and elusive to a learner, while a native speaker can feel it without ever thinking about it. I keep running up against that in English.

And as said above, in any case, it would be "об этом фильме".

In normal conversation better use слышал, слышала.
- Ты слышал, что случилось?

Слыхал is ruder word than слышал

In question
- Ты слыхал? Какой ужас!
usually means some negative sense.

Слышать is by no means a formal word, its register is neutral which means it can be used in all types of situations.

My opinion is that the word слыхал is stylistically deflated usage (стилистически сниженное употребление, sorry not sure how one adequately says this in english).

I, personally would only use this word as a part of a set phrase. For example "видом не видать, слыхом не слыхать". However I can imagine, that for some people this word is a part of their everyday life. For a learner of russian, choosing "слышать" over "слыхать" will never fail.
