Hi guys - I have another article, again on Khodorkhovsky, from Rossiyskaya Gazeta - any comments, suggestions and advice would be gratefully received.

Вечная тема для разговоров - почему мы такие "особые"? В чем наш "особый путь"? Климат? Территория? История? Менталитет? Евразия? Что такое наш "особый путь" - дураки и плохие дороги? Что ж, давайте посмотрим историю с Ходорковским - и получим ответ.

10 лет, шатаясь, падая, качаясь, кое-как поднималась российская экономика. И вот только в последние 2-3 года начала более или менее ровно идти в гору. Говорят, что все дело в ценах на нефть, что заслуга Президента и Правительства невелика. Не согласен - и именно сейчас мы можем оценить, как велика была заслуга власти. ВЛАСТЬ НЕ МЕШАЛА! Власть не делала глупостей. Это высшее достижение почти для всякой власти, это фантастическое достижение, неслыханное достижение для власти русской.

The Khodorkovsky Affair – A Very Russian Saga.

 

An ever present topic for discussion: what makes us ‘unique’?  In what does our ‘special path’ lie? In the climate?  The Slavic lands? Our mentality?  Eurasia?  What is this ‘special path’ of ours?  Are we, in the words of Nikolai Gogol, a nation of fools and bad roads?  Let us examine the Khodorkovsky case and we may find an answer to these questions.

 

In ten years the Russian economy trembled to its foundations, collapsed, swayed dangerously, picked itself up and somehow came back from the brink.   All this is said to be a result of the fluctuation in oil prices, that the the president and government is negligible had little hand in it.  I disagree – only now can we appreciate how much credit the government deserves.  The government did not interfere!  The government did not make any blunders.  This is the highest recommendation for a government anywhere, but for the Russian government it is virtually unheard of.

Но всему наступает конец. И он наступил - примерно тогда, когда настоящий экономический рост забрезжил не в воспаленных мозгах экономистов-теоретиков, а в реальности. Ах, агентство Moodis присвоило нам высокий рейтинг?! Ну так мы же этим "мудисам" ответим по-своему - покажем, кто из нас настоящий "мудис"!

Это - очень по-русски, это - чисто по-русски. В тот момент, когда дерево наконец начинает приносить плоды, что сделает немец, голландец и разный прочий швед? С удвоенной силой начнет его поливать водичкой и своими жадными слюнями в ожидании новых, удвоенно-утроенных плодов. А что сделаем мы? Гулять начнем, пить начнем, жить начнем - и к чертовой бабушке срубим это чертово деревце! Что за свадьба, если половина гостей не окажется в милиции, половина - в реанимации?! Любить по-русски - это вам не фартучки гладить, в щечку целовать, салфеточкой губки промокать. Любить - так любить, громить - так громить! Любить - себя, громить - себя, кого же еще?!

 

But it is all drawing to a close. And at a point when an upturn in economic growth was on the horizon, not just in the minds of economic theorists but in reality.  So Moody’s Investors Service gave us a high credit rating?!  And we will answer these people in our own way – by showing them which of us is the real credit rating agency.

 

This is typically Russian – exclusively Russian.  When a tree finally begins to bear fruit what do the Germans, Dutch and any other Anglo-Saxons do?  Redouble their efforts –

pour water and fertilizer onto it in the hope of doubling or trebling the next harvest.  And what do we do?  We go for walks, sing, drink, live a little and cut down that pesky tree and good riddance!  What’s the point in a wedding if half the guests don’t wind up in the custody of the militia and the other half in an emergency room?   To love in the Russian way means that you no longer have to iron the creases out of your clothes but just kiss your sweetheart on the lips and dab your lips with a napkin.   If you are going to love then love!  If you are going to demolish then demolish!  Love yourself, demolish yourself – who else?

Да, как только жизнь стала чуть-чуть налаживаться - вот тут-то нефтяная рента и ударила в голову. Да так ударила, что в глазах потемнело.

Я совсем не идеализирую Ходорковского. Он (какова бы там ни была национальность его бабушек и прабабушек) - настоящий русский нетерпеливо-размашистый человек. Ему эта рента тоже ударила в голову - может быть, сильнее, чем другим. "Широк человек, даже слишком широк - я бы сузил" - это Достоевский и про него написал. Скупать будущих депутатов сотнями, открыто строить "свою Думу" - это тоже "любить по-русски", гулять - так гулять. Тихие, скучные западные лоббисты так себя не ведут. Ходорковский "дерзнул власть". Он поднял "русский бунт" (отлично зная, что это - именно бунт). Он встал с колен, начал говорить с властью "на равных", не как "олигарх дрожащий", а "как право имеющий". В общем, "ты, Зин, на грубость нарываешься"...

В оправдание же Ходорковского можно сказать следующее.

Он сам создал свои миллиарды.

Он создал их в 39 лет. 8 миллиардов своих, добрых 50 миллиардов своей фирмы - и все в 39 лет. Это выдержать трудно.

Он, как ни крути, частное лицо. У него - мера ответственности частного лица.

He made his own millions.

 

He accomplished it by the age of 39.  Eight million of his own money and at least 50 million generated by his company – and all at age 39.  His luck was bound to run out.

 

In the end, he was just a private individual with the same level of responsibility as any other private individual

И, наконец, он сидит в тюрьме. Он готов был и готов по сей день рисковать собой - а это нечасто бывает вообще, этого совсем не бывает в России. Так что "упертый Ходорковский" вызывает естественное уважение и симпатию у всякого нормального человека. Ведь когда вы, согласно цитате из знаменитого романа, видите "сапог, наступающий на лицо человека", то вы обычно (если вы не Жириновский) симпатизируете лицу, а не сапогу. Другое дело, что я, повторяю еще раз, не считаю разумными действия самого Ходорковского и совсем не уверен, что, окажись он наверху, окажись он победителем, это было бы хорошо для России. Но сегодня эта опасность России не грозит.

Грозит совсем другая опасность.

Но что позволено Ходорковскому, то не позволено Юпитеру.
Is this Jupiter or floodlight here? There is no typo here the grammar is just as it appears in the original and is it saying that K has got away with more than Jupiter as a kind of metaphor?

Власть на то и власть, что ей никакие нефтяные ренты в голову ударять не должны. Власть потому и власть, что у нее есть (должно быть!) одно-единственное правило - "это только бизнес, ничего личного". The translation I have for this is the best I could find that sounds good in English.  Is there any other that would be better?

Russia faces an entirely different danger.

 

The machinery of the state is such that oil companies should not even consider striking it a blow.  The state is what it is today because it abides (as it must) by just one rule ‘All’s fair in business.’

Но коса, косящая гражданское общество, должна была в какой-то момент найти на камень. В общем-то, случайно этим камнем оказался Ходорковский. И вот мы услышали скрежет этого столкновения.

Если сейчас эту форточку закроют решеткой, то в стране "по факту" установится режим практически самодержавной власти. Режим, который в России был 1000 лет, который иногда бывал оправдан, а чаще бывал безумен, но режим, который реально отстал от времени уже в 1917 году. Сегодня такой режим означал бы национальную катастрофу. Надеюсь, что до нее дело не дойдет. Надеюсь, что эта русская история не станет ямой, в которую рухнет история России.

Khodorkovsky made a stand against the state – his motives, whether personal or even reminiscent of a schoolboy are not too important – but has not of course created a civil society. He named his philanthropic brainchild the Open Russia Foundation, but actually creating an ‘open Russia’ is very different from coining the phrase.  But Khodorkovsky represented a chance, albeit a small one, that civil society was possible within certain limitations – that it was not dead.  There was no ‘open Russia’ but a window on civil society remained open.

 

If that window is boarded up now, an autocratic regime will truly have been established in the country – a regime that survived in Russia for a thousand years, sometimes seeming justified but more often seeming senseless, which from all rational perspectives already defunct by 1917.  A return to that regime now would bring ruin on the country.  I hope that the present situation does not escalate to that extent.  I hope that Russia does not fall prey to its own historical trends.

And so for the last three or four years we have looked on as people have consistently failed to stand up and say ‘no’ to the Kremlin.  The broadcast media won’t present a bad situation in a positive light as it doesn’t present anything contentious at all.  Political parties mutter amongst themselves about the ‘destruction of a nation’ as the regional governors, the oligarchs, the political analysts, the economists and the clergy – the actors, the singers and the set designers – bow down before the state.  The list is long, but the situation has been clear to everyone for a long time.  Civil society has not put down any roots – that much is plainly evident in the present ‘elections’.

 

But the scythe mowing down civil society at some point was bound to strike against a rock.  The rock, it so happened, came in the shape of Khodorkovsky.  And we felt the reverberation of that collision. 

Ходорковский, который пусть по личным, пусть даже по "мальчишеским" мотивам, но оппонировал власти, не создавал, конечно же, гражданского общества. Назвать свой фонд "Открытая Россия" - легко, создать открытую Россию - трудно. Но Ходорковский давал шанс, пусть малый, но шанс на то, что гражданское общество в каких-то пределах возможно, что с ним не окончательно покончено. "Открытой России" не было, открытая форточка - оставалась.

В истории же с Ходорковским слишком много сугубо личного и слишком мало бизнеса. А когда личные мотивы начинают смешиваться с тупым, безличным скрежетом заржавленной и безличной государственной машины - вот тогда получается настоящий сумбур вместо музыки. Что мы и имеем в полном объеме.

Борьба с Ходорковским дорого обойдется России, а пиррова победа над Ходорковским может куда как дорого обойтись власти.
Так случилось, случилось на наших глазах, что за последние 3-4 года в России не осталось никого, кто смел бы сказать власти слово "нет". ТВ не смеет даже "истину царям с улыбкой говорить" - оно улыбается... и молчит. Политические партии бормочут себе под нос про "истребление народа" и кланяются, кланяются, кланяются. Местные губернаторы, олигархи, актеры-политологи, певцы-экономисты, дизайнеры-священнослужители... Можно долго перечислять, но все, в общем, всем давно понятно. С ростками гражданского общества покончено - что мы ясно видим на сегодняшних "выборах".

In Khodokhovsky’s case there was too much purely personal politics and too little business.  But when personal agendas stood in the way of the heavy, impersonal grinding of the rusty state machinery  the regular humming was replaced by a deafening cacophony, which is still raging strong.

 

The battle with Khodorkovsky will cost Russia dearly, but the country will pay tenfold more for a pyrrhic victory over the oil magnate.

Ultimately, he has been imprisoned.  He has always been prepared to run risks at his own expense and remains so to this day.  Thus it was only natural that the headstrong Khodorkovsky elicited a measure of admiration and sympathy from any unbiased observer.  After all, a passage from a novel in which you watched someone being pummelled underfoot, your sympathy would be drawn to the person on the floor rather then the person literally putting the boot in.  It is a separate issue that, as I have said, I consider Khodorkovsky’s actions to have beenill    ill-advised and am not in the least certain that were he to gain the advantage and emerge victorious it would be good for Russia.  But at the moment that is not an issue.

Indeed, at the very point when life had begun to normalise, the obsession with oil revenue took hold – аn intoxicating obsession that spelt the ruin of some people.

 

I in no way idealise Khodorkovsky.  He was (whatever the nationality of his grandmother and great grandmother) a classically impatient and bold Russian.  He had become intoxicated by oil revenue perhaps more than anyone.  ‘Man is capacious, even too capacious – I would narrow down,’ Dostoevsky could have been writing about Khodorkovsky.  Funding future candidates in their hundreds and openly creating ‘his own Duma’ is also an example of love in the Russian sense.  Dull covert western lobbyists do not behave like this.  Khodorkovsky dared to antagonise the state.   He fomented a ‘Russian rebellion’ (knowing full well that it was just a rebellion).  He abandoned creeping humility and began speaking to the authorities as an equal – not as a tremulous oligarch but as though this were a natural right.  In other words, he invited rough treatment.

It is a line from the very famous song written by Vladimir Visotzky.

"Зин" is a female name, "Зина" or "Зинаида". In spoken language you can say "Зин" instead of "Зина".

In this case Jupiter means government, power, establishment. Author wants to bring into focus that what is possible for individuals, is not allowed for statesmen.

In my time, knowledge of various proverbs, not necessarily Latin, was considered trendy and cool :) Books with proverbs and aphorisms still sell pretty good in Russia.
