We had an interesting discussion in class today, and I wanted to get some natives' impressions.

We were discussing how to render the idea in Russian slang of a "Gold Digger", meaning, of course, a woman who marries strictly for money....(Guess it could be a man as well).

My teacher suggested золотоискатель and охотница за золотом (I didn't write them down, so I'm trying to remember exactly what it was, but it was generally this idea.)

She said that золотоискатель felt mechanical, and the other just seemed too much of a direct translation. She doesn't know of any term that refers to this idea, unless the person just used the English word.

Suggestions?

Охотница за приданым.

Have never seen that in use. Any references?
Besides, it's (f)actually incorrect - приданое was supplied by bride's family.

Oops! My fault! I'm sorry for misguiding.
Usually say about a special kind of men охотники за приданным. They searh for a reach bride to marry.
And for woman I've no idea.

I think you are mistaken. Приданое is what the bride brings to the groom, not the other way round.

I don't think there is a ready expression. You will have to use descriptive phrases, like Она хочет выйти замуж по расчету or Она ищет обеспеченного жениха.

Or она охотится за тугим кошельком for less formal phrase.

weeeell....
Woman who uses her sex appeal to exploit man's wallet without marriage is called "женщина-вамп". There is no any other kind "вамп" and I am not sure why it is always "женщина-вамп".
Same thing for male - "альфонс" and "жиголо" (complete synonyms).
But for someone who is ready for marriage... I do not think there is such specific word or phrase.

just in case:
marriage for money = Брак по расчету

Never thought that "женщина-вамп" as well as "стерва" means a woman hunting the man's wallet ))) It's actually a "femme fatale", not a "gold digger" :P

I agree to the variants "невеста по расчету", "охотница за тугим кошельком", there is also "содержанка", but the meaning is a bit different - it is an unmarried woman, sponsored by a single man. We don't have a specific slang term for female "gold diggers" (equal to "gigolo").
