Hi!
In sweden when you say "the far east" you mean Japan, Taiwan, China. But in Russian Дальний восток means the far east of Russia. So what does Russians call what we call the far east....

Do you mean the Russian/Soviet Far East?
If so, they definitely are the minority there, since it has long ago been colonised by the Russians. Only certain northern areas like Sakha-Yakutia or Chukotka have significant percent of the oriental-looking people.

Here I say nothing concerning the term Дальний Восток, but the term Юго-Восточная Азия. Now Wikipedia (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%AE%D0%B3%D0%BE-%D0%92%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%87%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%90%D0%B7%D0%B8%D1%8F) uses this term for same lands, and it's used worldwide. Unfortunately, this term excludes China, Korea and Japan.

In professional usage, Дальний Восток is definitely Japan/Korea/China, while Viet Nam / Laos / Thailand / Myanmar / Singapore and, to a certain extent, Malaysia and Indonesia are strictly Юго-Восточная Азия. It's easy to check: see the list of Moscow State University Oriental and African Studies Institute's specializations (http://www.iaas.msu.ru/dep_r.html) (especially History Department.) Note that their Japanese studies are a separate specialization; as a kind of an insider (I considered entering that Institute 25 years ago, but ended up in the Journalism Department) I can tell you that this is not because they exclude Japan from the Far East, but simply because it's a wide field and a crowded branch of research.
Don't want to say that previous comments aren't worthy, but I just happened to know a bit of the field.

Thank you! So it really depends on context, I guess. because when they report from the elections in russia, they say just dal'nij vostok, but then it is undersstood that it is not non russian territories! ;-)

You may also say simply "Восток" and will be understood correctly, especially if in a clear context (e.g. when comparing cultures, etc.).

agree. But it's a common mistake. I had a dispute over this with my mom who was born and lived there until she was 20. In my opinion, both the Middle East and the Far East can be referred to as Asia or as East. There's no difference to me. But some people may find one.

There's another funny difference - what is Middle Asia for us (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan,) is Central Asia for the Westerners, while Central Asia in Russian geography is Mongolia, Western China (Uighuristan etc.) and, to a certain extent, Tuva and other parts of Southern Siberia (Altai, Shoria, Khakassia etc.)

By the way... if I'm not mistaken, the professional historians call Near East as Передняя Азия.
As for Japan, China etc, - I say just Китай or Япония. And as for Taiwan and near countries, I say "Юго-Восточная Азия".

I don't remember myself mentioning Передняя Азия, but you are mistaken anyway: in Russian geography usage, Передняя Азия (Southwestern Asia, in English usage) is a large region that overlaps with the Middle East, including the following regions: Caucasus, Turkey, Iran, Levant, Mesopotamia, and Arabian Peninsula. In Russian geography, Передняя Азия consists of Закавказье (Transcaucasian countries, such as Azerbaijan, Armenia etc.,) Средний Восток (Iran, Iraq) and Ближний Восток (Turkey, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Jordania, Saudi Arabia etc.)

You are absolutely free to do so, but it's just not exactly correct. Those countries are parts of Дальний Восток in Russian geography (and Russian Far East, which is just Дальний Восток in everyday common usage, is, strictly saying, российский Дальний Восток).
