hello!

alright... I have some questions.

1. Кто Здуард по профессии? Does this question ask ' what profession does edward do? '

also I want to say 'now the attic is under renovations therefore the cat has no home.'
Is this correct? : сейчас чердак ремонируют и так у кота нет дома

спосибо!!

1) Yes, it does.
2) "Сейчас чердак ремонтируется, поэтому у кота нет дома" or "... поэтому кот остался без дома"

It's Эдуард, not Здуард (these are two completely different letters, one of them a consonant, and another a vowel, representing completely different sounds)

It's also спасибо, not спосибо, just to be completely nitpicky :)

No, I guess you cannot. You can say it like that about something you actually take down to the repair shop (e.g. a car, a TV set or a pair of shoes).

You could say "Чердак на ремонте".
"Магазин закрыт на ремонт" == "Магазин на ремонте".
Though, it isn't commonly used.

This is another "figurative" use of по, right? So literally по means "along" (машины идут по дороге) but it can also mean "in the way of/in the sense of", as in по-другому "in another way", по-русски "in Russian" ... кто Эдуард по-профессии? would literally be "who is Edward, in the job sense?" i.e. what's his job?

Not quite. "По" here is not the same as in "по-другому" or "по-русски". It doesn't mean "in the way of" here; rather it's "according to". It is also not hyphenated in this usage, so "по-профессии" is wrong ("по профессии" is correct). Other examples of this usage:

Кто́ вы по убежде́ниям? = What are your beliefs? (Literally, "Who are you according to your beliefs?")
По национа́льности я ру́сский. = My nationality (i.e., ethnic background) is Russian.
По прогно́зу сино́птиков сего́дня бу́дет дождь. = According to the weather forecast it's going to rain today.

Actually this is getting a bit off-topic. New post here (http://community.livejournal.com/learn_russian/827449.html).

I suppose you were trying to say "сейчас чердак ремонтируют, так что у кота нет дома"

I would say that the most close translation of "Кто Эдуард по профессии" would be "What is the Edward's profession?"
