Hi all, I have a grammar introduction for my Russian course tomorrow and I would rather run some of the questions (all multiple choice) by the knowledgeable members of this group before submitting it. If anyone could help correct any of my answers (and I know there are a lot) then I would be extremely appreciative. I've probably made a number of mistakes since much of this is above my level, so any grammar explanation would also be helpful if I selected an incorrect answer, but it's not necessary. A simple correction of my answer would definitely suffice. :)

a. в лесу* - this answer is correct, although you can say "в северных лесах" or "в наших лесах" (not "только в лесах", you have to definite, say something about the forests)

22. the question is a bit unclear. How would you ask it in English?

24. Какая цена белого платья? - doesn't sound right to me. Either you should insert the preposition у or use kehrmann's variant or better yet ask Сколько стоит белое платье? Of course, the latter may not be a good exercise from the grammatical point of view, but it's more natural to ask this sort of question this way.

28. Иван Петровуич...

40. it's correct grammatically, but doesn't sound right because you indicate that he had finished playing by using the perfective form of the verb, сыграл. Therefore, the 2nd part of the sentence is redundant. I don't know if you wanted to say something else with this.

41. Какой адрес старой библиотеки? Doesn't sound right to me without the preposition у. Just like in 24. Possession is often indicated with this preposition: У меня/него/неё есть/была/будет машина. У библиотеки есть адрес. У платья есть цена.

47. Она тоже шла туда. Although grammatically correct, this may be not what you wanted to say in English. It could be Она тоже ходила туда just as well. Or maybe even Она тоже пошла туда. What's the context for this sentence? Where was she going to? Was that a single occurrence or a habitual action? Are you emphasizing the action in some way or just stating the fact that it happened?

18b (present continious)

I doubt that the act of giving book takes a lot of time. I'm not sure it is right to traslate it with present tense.
Like in "We're leaving tomorrow - мы уедем завтра"

We can also use the present continuous tense to talk about the future—if we add a future word!! We must add (or understand from the context) a future word. "Future words" include, for example, tomorrow, next year, in June, at Christmas etc. We only use the present continuous tense to talk about the future when we have planned to do something before we speak. We have already made a decision and a plan before speaking.


I might be wrong, but i can't imagine situation when i say "я даю книгу Маше" as actually right now i'm in the process of passing the book from my hands to hers.

May be you are right. But there was no context in this question. So, I decided, that somebody is talking to me by phone or icq, and I say "I am giving the book to Masha. She is saying you: "Thank you"))

so when you're speaking in Russian via icq, will you type "Я отдала книгу Маше, она сказала (она говорит): "Спасибо" " or "Я даю книгу Маше, она говорит спасибо"
Sounds like you're giving and typing simultaneously and both actions are taking the same amount of time.

Anyways, it's just my humble opinion that "я даю книгу" sounds awkward to me, but there are a lot of awkward sentences in language textbooks.

In Russian "даю" may involve an act which happens in the future. For example, in the following: "Значит, как и договорились, я даю книгу Маше".
