Could anyone tell me the meaning of the phrase битва за один источник?

It doesn't translate well into English.  Does it mean to fight over the same thing? You would expect a word more like цель - goal.

Or is it not a common phrase at all?  Thanks.

depends on the context

Usually I meet this phase in a context

"Битва за один источник финансирования"

meaning - fight for the same pool of money (like budgetary, or from some fund etc.)

I don't think that "битва за один источник" as a separate phrase is common met in language practice.

It's not common at all and may make sense only in a specific context (with a specific "источник").
In other words, it is definitely not an idiom.

That phrase can be met when some concurrence is described: there's a single source of smth, and many opponents want to get it.
