churches?

I was informed by a middle-aged taxi driver in a rural area that the difference between деревня and село was that the former had a church and the latter did not. However, when I looked in Dahl, it stated that деревня was a village without a church, and there is no entry for село at all (I use the on-line version, if that makes a difference). I accept that my driver was mistaken and that Dahl is correct, but is село not a word? I'm not sure what to make of this.

Also is there any way to anticipate which one-syllable masculine nouns will have a locative ending of y (ряд, порт, и.т.д.)? Is there a rule I don't know?

I always thought that село is smth bigger than деревня
and it looks true according to Dahl.

Село IS a word and - traditionally! - it has a church.

Село is a word and actually I've allways thought that деревня is bigger село thats the difference!

I was taught in school the same thing: село has a church, деревня does not.

Originally, село had to have a church. But now it`s nothing but a spoken tradition: Soviet years (urbanisation and atheistic politics) messed it up.

You need to find entry "селить"

It's kinda interesting: село comes from селиться [to settle], деревня - form дерево [tree - main material for houses].

There are also посёлок [in general similar to село but smaller], хутор [smallest - as much as several houses except for казачий хутор], станица [cossac union of villages]...
