What is the best Russian equivalent to "kill two birds with one stone"? Одним ударом убить двух зайцев?
The American version is used all the time-- is this a similarly popular phrase in Russian or is it more rare?

+1. The widely known saying is "За двумя зайцами погонишься, ни одного не поймаешь", and "убить двух зайцев" is used without any details. for example, "таким образом, он убил сразу двух зайцев: и контракт заключил, и по счетам расплатился"
