Jun. 5th, 2008 11:07 pmI've seen the phrase "что-то в этом роде" a few times recently in literature. I was wondering-- is this where the word "вроде" is from? If so, is it ok to say the long form above instead of "вроде" in conversation?

что-то типа
my uneducated guess would be yes, it's related to род as there's the same phrase with the word тип and they're often interchangeable.
