I've seen the phrase "что-то в этом роде" a few times recently in literature. I was wondering-- is this where the word "вроде" is from? If so, is it ok to say the long form above instead of "вроде" in conversation?

I know what vrode means. I'm not asking that. I'm wondering if it evolved from the phrase "v rode" or "v etom rode" as I wrote above. Are these phrases connected and is "vrode" just a shortened form that evolved out of convenience?

Yes, it really is - for example:

Q: Какой дистрибутив Linux порекомендуешь?
A1: Поставь Fedora или что-нибудь в этом роде.
A2: Поставь Fedora или что-нибудь вроде него.

Both answers suggest installing RPM-based distribution.

"Вроде" has two very different meanings. One controls a verb (including implicit "to be") and adds modality of uncertainness to it, the other is indeed similar to "в роде". Yet they are not immediately interchangeable even in the later meaning. For example "У него машина вроде моей" cannot be replaced "У него машина что-то в этом роде моей", you could probably say "У него такая же машина, как у меня или что-то в этом роде".
