Hey. I am Alina from California, live in Germany. I am trying to learn Russian, but I am pretty bad at it so far.
I would love to practice with someone who can help me out.

Anyway, I was wondering if "мир" really means both 'peace' and 'world'. If so, how do you say world peace?
большое спасибо ♥

in no case "freedom", but "peace" and "world". Yes, these words are homonyms in Russian.

Мир means "PEACE" and "world".

Also, there is an older (now mostly "poetic") version of the word meaning "world" - свет.

It (свет) also means "light" (a noun, as in "speed of light"). ;-)

In the older Russian the word used to spell differently, depending on the meaning. That is, there were two different words that pronounced the same. But with the elimination of i the two words are now just one word with several different meanings. It used to be: мир = peace, мiр = world.

Миръ & міръ, to be precise.

World peace will be "Мир во всем мире". Also, during the Soviet era thу very popular pacifistic slogan was "Миру - мир!" meaning "Give peace to the world!".

>In orthodox christian context "мир" means

Note that in Orthodox Christian context, it is still written as мiръ, even now, even on the Web (check out various Orthodox Christian blogs and sites.) This is to distinguish мiръ (as "world") from мир (as "peace").

It's written not by Orthodox, but by ones who prefer pre-1917 orthography (see [livejournal.com profile] ijitsa_ru. For sake of distiguision some (even A.Solzhenitsyn) use мiр.
