Whenever one reads an article in English on how to select a hacker-proof password, one is cautioned not to make what is apparently a common stupidity and use the word "password" as one's password. Is there a Russian equivalent? If not, what Russian word would you use when trying to explain this in Russian? Is there a Russian word Russians are always cautioned not to use for their password, other than "password"?

As we mainly use English letters in the logins and such, password "password" must be used widely. Other common options are "********"(eight asterisks), "12345678" and evident options like one's name and date of birth.

Better use 'пароль'.
Right now, more and more systems targeted for a russian-speaking users allow use of Cyrillic as logins (and in passwords too). Non-cyrillic rule for login/password right exists in a legacy systems, developed more than 5-10 years ago.
BTW, most of these systems give user a direct translation of standard 'good password' guides written for english-speaking users since they implement same password checking logic.

Recently there was a scandal (http://www.lenta.ru/news/2008/01/19/hack/) when a site designed to be a blog portal for celebrities pre-created several accounts for them with the same password 123456.

You reminded me one old rumour. Many people used their birth year as 4-digit code for automated luggage office at railway stations; and there were some thieves that estimated people's age by their appearance, opened boxes and stole their things.

It's not a rumour, it was widely discussed in one of the first press crime discussions in 1985 (when Soviet press was finally granted a right to write about crime.)

In that case using month+day would be even better. It's ~12*30=360 combinations, whereas the age in years amounts to only about 20 (and that's probably a great overestimation).

One does not have to multiply 12 to 30 to know that an average year has 365 days (and this amounts to the number of possible combinations) :)
Problem is, people often have great difficulties to remember the exact number of the month. They may remember that they were born on, say, April 15, but will spend several minutes counting months on their fingers, losing track, cursing, and starting again. Just look at the average people filling out some form at a bank or at another authority that requires demographic data.

Those are some old articles you have been reading - for the last 15 years or so using any proper word as a password has been a bad idea :)
