Hi! I'm actually not learning Russian but I'm working on an illustration and I need to know how to write a bit of Russian for it.

So, how would you translate "Do you like my hat?" into Russian?

"Тебе нравится моя шляпа?" - if you're addressing to one person that you know well (if you're tutoyering =) )
or
"Вам нравится моя шляпа?" - if you need to be polite / if you're addressing to a group of people.

This is possible, although it means "How do you like my hat?" rather than "Do you like my hat?".

Don't you think those are synonimical constructions? I can't seriously believe that you expect an answer to the first one in the lines of "medium rare with French fries please".

Jokes aside, however, you're right; they do pretty much have the same meaning. There is a slight difference in tone in both Russian and English—the "how" sounds a bit more boastful to me—but it's minor.

Please notice that not every thing worn on head is шляпа.
Usually шляпа is a man's or woman's hat with brims ( boater, sombrero and so on). Small woman's hat with solid frame is шляпка, cap (a hat with wisor) is кепка, service cap is фуражка, knotted, fur or other soft hat is шапка.
